joe -- we all have to understand that in a not for profit transit system -- u will never please everyone . for every one u please u will screw someone else. u said to imagine someone going from the 7 train to roslyn if the lines were merged - granted this individual would be a little unhappy if they had to ride a local to roslyn and didnt ride the limited to roslyn that would operate peak times - but there would be someone else now who would be please that the 521 (n21) runs to glen cove all night long so they can get to work at glen cove hospital at 3am. which the money saved by merging the lines would allow for reallocating the resources like running service to glen cove hourly throughout the night

as far as the numbering system - i have imagined a new jersey transit style numbering system like the followin
1-99 manhattan lines
100-199 brookyln lines
200-299 bronx lines
300-399 queens lines
400-499 richmond lines (SI)
500-599 nassau lines
600-699 suffolk lines (as the suffolk government is all for an mta takeover
700-799 westchester lines (as this will likely occur at somepoint)
800-899 express lines
900-999 specialty line or possibly future rockland, putnam, dutchess lines

the money that i could save the mta by streamlning all of these overlapping routes would allow for the reallocating of these conserved resources and allow for the realistic transit system that suffolk county leaders are calling for. as far as i understand - nassau and suffolk residents pay as much commuter taxes as city residents and therefore deserve a decent transporation network as well. Y do we have 1,2,3,4,5,6 routes operating along merrick blvd in jamaica 7 days a week and residents in bayshore cant even get to south shore mall or south side hospital on sunday? there are countless routes all over the current 5 counties (not so much staten island as the island is very spread out) but the other four boroughs and nassau have a tremendous waste of resources resulting from needless overelapping. just the streamling the q12/n20/n21 into 1 line at even time intervals as stated in an earlier post would probably save at least a million a year in operting costs. look at some of those n20 great neck trips now at 4-5-6 in the evening. they leave flushing with 5 ppl and leave the q12 ppl behind to jam pack in a casey stengle bus - what a waste of resources- that is y the mta is crying they cant take suffolk as steve levy is calling for -- the toughest part for suffolk under my ideas would be finding the land to store the buses as there is only one property now in north amityville which could be used as a temporary depot

Perhaps with Mr. Mangano coming into office and Mr. Astorino in Westchester, it's time for MTA Regional Bus to come into existence. I know most of you on this website seem to think that the Bee Line System is so great. Well, except for the 1, 2, 20, 40 and maybe the 60 lines, the rest of the system is a disaster. Try waiting 1 1/2 hours for a bus that's supposed to run every 30 minutes; great eh. And that happens quite regularly. Coordination between rail and bus lines, not even in your dreams. Service after 9PM and Sundays, you must be kidding.

i cant guarantee the bus/rail connections - that is difficult - even bus to bus coordination is difficult - but i could streamline countless routes throughout the existing system that overlap eachother with no coordination that would save substantial amounts to provide efficient service throughout the region. take a look at madison ave for example - there is no coordination between m1,2,3,4 buses -then u have the q32 overlapping them for a stretch. if u r standing at madison/42 outside grand central- u might not get a bus for 10 minutes and then u will get 3 or 4 at the same time - another example of wasted resources.

under the q12/n20/n21 streamlining into one compressed line the 520/521 - the q 13 will be relabeled the 313 and be rerouted along sanford. the 313 and 328 (q28) will continue to provide supplement service along northern on their existing routes. the service between roslyn clock tower to hicksville rail station (formerly n20) will be combined with the n80 line and relabeled as the 580 Massapequa Park, Westfield Shoppingtown to Roslyn Clock Tower. I have chosen the 80 as this line serves nys 107 from massapequa to hicksville and is the most logical to continue on 107 beyond hicksville. after departing lirr hicksville n/b - service will no longer operate to the rear of broadway mall but will continue north on 106 back into 107 and operate to roslyn under the current n20 route. in roslyn - all service will terminate and originate at the clock tower w/b side. there will be very little or no layover on roslyn end b/c of loop turnaround. customers on old northern between clock tower and bryant under viaduct wishing to travel east will board the w/b 580 at that point - the farebox will recode at the bottom of the ramp to bryant. after departing the w/b stop - bus will make right on mineola ave and right on 25 to travel back east over the viaduct to greenvale. service will operate at regular 30 minute service intervals

another possibility would be to run the 20 to cw post instead of roslyn. this would then provide regular 15 min service intervals on northern between roslyn clock tower and cw post - which covers the entire serviceable area of northern in that there is really no need for service east of 107 on 25a till u get to huntington - the 20 can no longer operate to or from hicksville while being merged with q12 b/c 107 through jericho and hicksville is much more prone to delays than glen cove is and would cause many buses to be outta sink on their return to flms. the schedule off peak in flms would look like this then -
1:00 520 to great neck rail station
1:05 520 to cw post college
1:10 521 to glen cove rail station
1:15 520 to great neck rail station
1:20 520 to cw post college
1:25 521 to glen cove rail station
1:30 520 to great neck rail station
service between flms and great neck lirr would operate at 5 min intervals
service between great neck lirr and roslyn clock tower would operate at 5-10 min intervals
service between roslyn clock and glen cove/ or cw post would operate at 15 min intervals

a review of the ridership levels would be conducted immediatley after the consolidation is put into effect - in the event that there is too much service operating through nassau and not enough through queens then the service headways would be improved to 4 min in queens and reduced i nassau as follows
1:00 520 to great neck lirr
1:04 520 to cw post
1:08 520 to great neck lirr
1:12 521 to glen cove lirr
1:16 520 to great neck lirr
1:20 520 to cw post
1:24 520 to great neck lirr
1:28 521 to glen cove
1:32 520 to great neck lirr
under this service pattern -
service between flms and great neck lirr would operate at regular 4 min service intervals
service between great neck lirr and roslyn would operate at regular 8 min intervals instead of 5-10 b4
service between roslyn and glen cove/cw post would operate at regular 16 min service intervals

by terminating the 20 at cw post instead of roslyn and the 80 at cw post - the 80 service would not operate at 30 min intervals - by terminating the 20 at roslyn and turning around there - allowing the 80 to service the rest of northern to cw post and hicksville would allow for the entire 80 line to be improved to regular 30 minute intervals. service between roslyn clock and cw post would operate every 30 then instead of every 15-16 if 20 went to cw post

ok lets do it--- heres the new service pattern for the merrick corridor that i would implement ---

N4 and Q5 to be combined into one service pattern and relabeled the 504/505. trips will depart Jamaica center - parsons blvd at regular 5 minute service intervals. an off peak schedule would look like this
1:00 504 to Freeport Rail Station
1:05 505 to Green Acres Mall
1:10 504 to Freeport Rail Station
1:15 505 to Green Acres Mall
1:20 504 to Freeport Rail Station
1:25 505 to Green Acres Mall
1:30 504 to Freeport Rail Station
this service pattern would result in the following
svce between archer/parsons and merrick/hook creek would operate at regular 5 min service intervals
svce between merrick/hook creek and free rail station would operate at regular 10 min intervals
svce between hook creek/merrick and green acres would operate at regular 10 min intervals
overnight hawk service would operate on the 504 only and provide regular 60 min service intervals between jamaica center/parsons and freeport rail station
runs would operate jointly out of their existing depot assignments
during peak times - additional 505 service will be provided throughout queens and utilize rosedale station as the eastern terminal as is done on current overnight Q5 service and 504 will operate limited stops throughout queens
a peak schedule would be
5:00 504 to free
5:03 505 to mall
5:06 505 to rosedale rr

the Q84 and Q85 will be combined into one crosstown line and relabeled the 585. all service will operate to and from green acres and will no longer operate to or from jamaica center. the 243 st service in rosedale is eliminated and will be combined with the Q111 - likely in a triangle turnaround - the Q111 will operate north on 243 st to francis lewis and right fran lewis -provding local service on francis lewis

service will be provided at regular 5-15 minute srvce intervals throughout the day and hawk service will operate at regulare 30 min intervals - introducing new hawk service to th Q84 branch and hawk service will operate to and from greenacres. all service will be operated by jamiaca depot.

third leg transfers will be introduced throughout much of the system to enable customers on routes that have been modified to travel at the same expense

*****************for those of you just tuning in********************

for those of u who are reading my numerous posts here unclear of what all this talk is about -- during the past 18 months - Joe Smith and the executives of MTA Bus and City Bus have taken full control of the nassau county LIBus system from nassau county. Tom Suozzi has broken their chops about some stupid shit like colors of buses and now he will be gone soon. Steve Levy, the Suffolk County exeuctive has also called for his bus operations to be absorbed into the MTa family but the MTA has cryed that they cannot afford to. So therefore, I, having sufficient knowledge of the system, have been sharing ideas of how many route troughout the system can be streamlined to provide funds for suffolk county

Those N20/21 do get packed, in the REVERSE peak direction. The buses are stuffed going out to Nassau in the morning and back to Flushing at night. The MTA should be running more buses reverse peak and less peak.

take a look at the N20/N21s leaving Flushing late in the evening and during peak times. yes thats right PEAK times. sometimes they are leaving flushing main with only a handful of ppl. Y is that???? Y is the MTA running a bus for a handful of ppl? b/c of jurisdictional limitations - thats Y. the ONLY reason two buses are running down northern blvd at 9 -10- 11 at nite (even during peak times) is b/c the small handful of ppl on bus 1568 for example that says LI Bus on the side wish to disembark a half of a mile or a mile farther along northern blvd which is beyond the city line into another jurisdiction - nassau county. this is a complete waste of resources. here are two buses running bumper to bumper with eachother with two of the highest paid drivers in the nation for not even 1 full bus load of ppl -- only b/c several wish to disembark farther along northern into a different jurisdiction. For each Q12/N21 that gets combined - there could be another trip added to the local lines in Nassau - an 11:15 from hempstead on the N49 for example then an 8:15 n49 from hempstead on sunday nite - then a 9:00 from hicksville on the n49 on sunday. for each resource that is conserved by unnecessarily overlapping buses within queens b/c of jurisdictional limits - a new resource could be relocated within nassau somewhere. maybe a new 11:10 trip on n22 from hicksville sunday service on n80 linking TWO shopping centers
