A tour bus overturned on a highway near Hoover Dam outside Dolan Springs, Arizona on Friday, killing seven and injuring at least 15 others, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

This piece focuses upon the unusual number of injuries and fatalities involved and why such tragedy might have been avoided.

Pictured below is what is left of the 'vanette' that was involved in this single vehicle mishap.

In all media reports the vehicle has been characterized as a 'bus' - it is not a 'bus' by any stretch of the imagination!

It is an oversized windowed van body mounted on a light to medium duty truck chassis, and very probably a top heavy application.

These 'vanettes', as I categorize them, do well in multi stop 'Dial-A-Ride' services in city and suburban operation but are certainly not capable of the twists and turns at highway speeds in over the road charters with full loads.

There could be any number of reasons as to why this particular accident happened and only a full investigation will eventually determine the cause, but the one thing that is almost certain is that lives might have been saved had the owner provided the proper heavy equipment for the job.

Mr Linsky -

Noted that, did you? I slipped on my Safety Director, Ad Hoc hat as I viewed TV footage. You want my Accident Report on that one now?

IMHO, I hve some very skittish feelings about use of the so called "Vanette" types in any "Big Road" apps, where speeds in excess forty (40) mph
(or so) are just the usual way of doing business. Laws of Physics (which can't be repealed, and are non negotiable) tell us the particular vehicles
don't have much margin for error on highway use...

Unfortunately, we have various accidents and incidents, over the years that tend to support the disenchanted view...

As a truck driver I know how to handle these and I would not blame the vehicle for the accident but the driver as he should know it's limits.
I am one who has gone beyond the limits many times. lol on many types of vehicles and conditions. yes even on dirt and hills and mountains.
You would drive these as you would a truck.
