This morning, NYC area TV news programs were showing photos of NYCT 8958 (1996 Nova RTS-06 assigned to Jamaica Depot), which struck a utility pole EB on Merrick Blvd. while working the Q5 early this AM. The tall wooden pole snapped after the impact, which then dropped live electrical wires and a transformer onto the rooftop of 8958. The B/O and 2 passengers were taken to local hospitals with what were described as "non life threatening injuries". Apparently witnesses had seen the RTS traveling eastbound at "a very high rate of speed" when it struck the pole.
One of the news photos on Channel 4 (WNBC-TV) showed 8958 being towed by a large MTA wrecker; damage to the RH side looked pretty severe.

Not necessarily!

The greatest feature of the RTS is that it is built in modules making the replacement of the front end section a piece of cake compared to straightening out the sheet metal work on previous models.

It's a good bet that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, 8958 will be back in revenue service sooner than you think!
