With the growing use of automated stop announcement systems, I was wondering, who has the most market share? - Digital Recorders or Clever Devices? What features does one offer over another?
I know that Digital Recorders did originally have a version of the Talking Bus system where announcements are triggered manually by the press of a button. Digital Recorders pioneered the GPS based system of automated announcements. Clever Devices initally offered a system with a pedometer that triggered announcements after programmed distance intervals, however, the system's main flaw was that it could trigger false announcements if there is a routing detour. Clever Devices now also offers a GPS based system.
Now that ABQ RIDE has retired their TMC RTS buses, the entire fleet is equipped with the Digital Recorders Talking Bus GPS system. The Thomas SLF200 400 series buses (the first to feature such system) feature the DR500 system. The rest of the fleet (Neoplans and New Flyers) features the DR600, which in addition to offering automated announcements, can communicate with many other electronic devices, performing diagnostics and collecting data. Very state of the art! |
