By the 90s I think 357 was painted white over the fluted aluminum. I'm certain 358 was the one that still was exposed aluminum into the 90s. If I had only known the power of photos when I was in high school I could have taken scores of Green Line pics! |
According to Alan Bromberger's rosters published in Motor Coach Age, Triboro Coach #625-629 (s/n M026-M030) were originally Green Lines #350-354. The GMDD T8H5307A delivery list at Alan Gryfe's Transit Canada site (probably the one you're referring to; OMOT doesn't do GMDD delivery lists) shows them as being delivered directly to Triboro. It's likely they were initially ordered for Green but were diverted prior to delivery; DOT did similar shuffling between companies with some of the later RTS orders. |

Jeez I do not recall those Flxies at all. I doubt they were in Arverne I would have known them. And yes the order from '68 is what I'm refering to. I thought it was strange those Flxibles would carry numbers of buses that were not fully retired yet. By the way I am enjoying these conversations about the good old Green Lines! |

Catfish,
I'm sorry that I've lost what was probably my best GBL photo which was taken at the Arverne Garage probably in the mid forties showing a combination of Mack model CX's (500's) and CT's (600 & 700's) sitting out on the parking lot.
I had it in the gallery file at BusTalk.net but the carpet was pulled out from under us before we could save most of the pictures to our own files.
Some of that gallery is still available but does not include Green Line at all.
Well, as they say in French; c'est la vie!

Mr. L and Catfish....
You guys are talking 2 different buses...
Catfish, those low 100 numbered Flxibles were Grumman ADB's, not New Looks like 201-220. I'd never seen the 100's at GBL, but I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe...they were over at Command with the old Triborough 900's.
Speaking of 900's.......
Here is JBL 973 dressed in GBL Livery.

An original 1000 series GBL RTS (note: original A/C slope back).
An original 220 series GBL RTS (note: 96" width + single curtain).
An original 300 series GBL New Look .
An original 550 series GBL Grumman ADB
A NYCTA GM New Look.
The photo looks circa 1980-1982

Ah.........
Found this in the gallery, right here at Bus Talk...look for the original.
Triboro Bus 629 was originally GBL 354. Find the original in the gallery and look at the high resolution photo. Notice the 50-50 curtains and dark green dash?

F.T.,
Interesting photo of GBL 115 (ex Manhattan & Queens 115) seen with other Mack CT's and working the Q22 line out of Far Rockawy.
Don't laugh when I tell you that I only recently bought this photo from eBay for about five or six dollars, and am now wondering where the vendor got it from! - no matter (see better quality version below).
As I mentioned to Catfish in an earlier post;
"I'm sorry that I've lost what was probably my best GBL photo which was taken at the Arverne Garage probably in the mid forties showing a combination of Mack model CX's (500's) and CT's (600 & 700's) sitting out on the parking lot.

If you should ever come across it, please post it for me.
Thanks.

Wait a minute now, when was that picture of 973-1 taken? Thats not the one I rode on. The 973 I knew was an old Triboro. That other picture form the railroad station is wild. That's a 200 series RTS from Green Line? |

The 220-series were 102" and didn't appear until 1985. The bus in the photo does appear to be full-width, too. Green Lines didn't have 96" RTSes until 1989 when they inherited some from Command. |

When did Green Lines get the 2 stripe light green and dark green paint scheme? The livery on the 220 series RTS there looks like the Triboro Coach livery except that it is Green and says Green Bus Lines.

What happened to the RTS 03's 1001, 1002, 1004, 1008, 1010, 1011, and 1014? I've only seen images of 1003, 1005-1007, 1009, 1012, 1013, amd 1015 as retrofitted with the final Green Lines Livery. |

Jusextreme,
While I'm the site's expert on pre 1960 Green Bus Line history, I am at a loss to even try to figure out the backgrounds on their RTS's.
There were so many switches and transfers of these buses from one agency to the next through the years that you'd need a score card to keep up with it.
If you have copies of the Motor Coach Age magazines dealing with Triboro, Green, Queens/Steinway, Jamaica and Command, you'll see in the rosters pretty much exactly where these buses went and finally wound up.
The only one I can account for is GBL # 10,001 which is now part of the Transit Museum and carries its original livery.
BTW; welcome to BusTalk and we look forward to your input and contributions.

All of these buses were retired from service in 2000 except 1002 and 1007. 1007 sat without an engine in 1998 and never had it replaced. 1002 was gone before 1998 but not sure when. All the buses carried the last livery with the exception of 1002 and thats only because I don't know for sure. 1012 Remained as a training/special event bus until GBL's demise in Jan. 2006 and is now parked at Varsity Bus in Brooklyn.
Looking at the list of buses you say you seen images of, I am guessing these were taken after retirement, as these buses were stored in Brooklyn at Varsity and in Rockaway at GBL.
On a side note, 1002 was fitted with a different A/C Condenser cover from the rest of the "slope backs" when the A/C was converted. 1002 received this in the early half of the 1980's. |

No wonder why I've seen 1012 driving around Cross Bay in 2002 and I last rode one of these in 1999 but I don't remember the number. I've also seen images on bustalk back in 2006 of 1014 with the final livery working on the Q10 but I can't find it anymore. Does anyone have that picture?
