And just as with track rails, there were many variations of "toid" rails out there. Six alone had been used on the "Noo Yawk" subways, including two "umbrella" types (75 and 150 lbs.) used at one time or another on the Steinway tubes of the Flushing line. The others were:
- original 75 lb. IRT rail (on the Contract 1 and 2 lines)
- 150 lb. IRT rail (in the Transit "Mew-seem" there is a section of that rail, rolled in 1917 by Lackawanna Steel Co.; they designated that section '1503' in their catalogues and in fact that was embedded in that section)
- 150 lb. LIRR rail (used in the early years of the Rockaway line)
- 150 lb. NMC rail (began with the BRT/BMT sections of the Dual Contracts, later used by SIRT and IND)
Notice I didn't mention the replacement 84C "toid" rails; I think in terms of "legacy," as you probably do. |

W.B.:
Yet again, this is a truly fascinating part of our hobby that seldom sees "serious"discussion.
To any "average"person, a "toidrail"is simply what it appears be; always the same, no variations, all very much "cookie cutter".....how much they need to learn~!
The "joint service" travkage of the PRR/H&M/PATH between Jersey City and Newark was always most fascinating, as you had "toid rail" trackage running beneath PRR catenar (the only such arrangement in the area)
Too, most never thinkof the effects that salt water can have on "toid raul"infrastructure, at times of flooding.....

They may not be the same, but they almost resemble the IRT's original 75 lb. sections. Didn't this kind of layout last up to the final shutdown of the Culver Shuttle in 1975 (the last of its kind in "Noo Yawk" with elevated-style "toid rail")? |

Good point to bring up; I cannot be sure but, (pardon the pun!) I think you might be on the "right track"........

Here is a rare early 1900s view of the interior of the BRT's vast Park Row terminal; note that not only is the "toid rail" exposed, it also was of a more "slender" design than what would become commonplace on the subways......

Here we have a "Toidy-Toid" Street bound-train departing "The Square", circa-1960; the roof of "WALDO" tower is just visible above the train (mid center of photo)........

| There were a couple shots of Waldo Tower in John Henderson's (no relation, presumably, to the street where H&M/PATH yards were for decades) Gotham Turnstiles books. |

That outstanding book, "GOTHAM TURNSTILES"brings back so many great memories for Your's Truly, especially the photos of the H&M, SIRT, and Newark City Subway.
What you see in these pictures is everything I grew up with, and was so very lucky to have experienced, thanks to Mom!
The overhead concrete bridge to the east of "WALDO" os Summit Avenue, then used by several PSNJ bus routes.
Yes, I remember it all......

In this 1973 photo we see an inbound PSNJ/TNJ "bullet" Fishbowl nearing the end of its run on the #124, from Hackensack.
The bus is on the Summit Avenue bridge, with the PATH and Penn-Central tracks just below.............

it also should be note that,on both the east and west concrete walls of the Summit Avenue overpass (facing the travks) once had PRR keystones cast into the walls.
Alas, a few decades ago, these were sandblasted into oblivion.
Guess PATH had issues with ANYTHING connected to the historic "Aitch & Em" system.......

Believe it, if their first acts upon taking over "the Tubes" in 1962 were of any indication. As Gotham Turnstiles noted about PATH viz the "Aitch & Em" past, "their paranoia knows no bounds." |
