There seems to be interest in the more modern day buses by the younger enthusiasts. Maybe they're making memories in these buses like we did in "our" buses?

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying watching videos on YouTube of the Bus Grease Monkey rescuing abandoned OTR primarily buses, mostly equipped with GM 2-cycle Diesel engines. Did my share of Greyhound riding back in the day.

Cyberider:

Speaking of GREYHOUND......

A number of their classic 1930s "743s" were STILL in use in the 1960s, as charter buses, church buses, etc. (I recall seeing some in charter service as a young lad!)

Also, a number of the iconic "SILVERSIDES" were still in use well into the 1960s, in Bay-area commuter service!

TRUE CLASSICS, all! Wink

(BTW: I currently have close to 200 vintage toy GREYHOUND buses in my collection, including die-cast models!) Very Happy

In my general area of New Jersey:

The Last Old Looks vanished in 1986.

The last Fishbowls bit the dust in 1998.

The last Flex New Looks were retired well over 20 years ago,

Even the once-commonplace Metro "B" and RTS have now disappeared into history.

Time flies far too fast, for this gray fellow.......... Sad

There were some GM Fishbowls in service not far away until 2005 or 6, I believe. New York Bus Service. I was watching them on webcams back then. Very well maintained and nice looking.

Time flies faster every day for us old guys.

Going even further back (when I was growing up in Hudson County) the last prewar buses were gone by about 1966; ditto the square -window Old Looks.

MACKS and WHITES were soon to follow.

"DE CAMP's" and "INTER-CITY's" handsome ACF-BRILL C-44 suburbans were retired sometime around 1967/1968.

Again, I'll always think myself so fortunate to have as many great memories as I do of truly classic buses.................it's all so long ago, now........

The last square window Old Look I saw in Phoenix was in 1972. It was parked at the main bus stop in downtown Phoenix but not in service. I don't think any of those had been in regular service for years. I took a photo of it which I still have!

Cyberider:

It is also odd that none of the old "independent" companies I grew up ever purchased any of the "new generation" square-window Old Looks that were being manufactured through the 1960s.

Every one of the companies I knew went straight from Old Looks to "second generation" Fishbowls.........

Also...........

Interestingly, none of the old Hudson County "indy" companies I knew ever rostered postwar TWIN COACHES.

These buses were totally absent from the local bus scene, back in the 50s and 60s.............

None of those "new generation" square window Old Looks in Phoenix either. I believe there were a few of the post war Twins when we moved here in the mid-50's but I never rode one. I do remember seeing their distinctive rear windows, though.

Cyberider:

As none of the "indy" companies here were at all interested in the "new generation" square-window Old Looks of the 1960s, the only square-window Old Looks here with square windows (and they were plentiful until about 1966/1967) were the pre-1948 models.

With these now-gone local operators, the first Fishbowls did not begin to arrive until later in the 1960s.......

The only "indy" around here that I remember was Sun Valley. One could transfer between Phoenix Transit and Sun Valley. The Phoenix buses had the route number on the transfer and Sun Valley had "SV." I still have a couple of SV transfers.

Phoenix Transit was an early adopter of New Looks, much to my chagrin. Don't know when Sun Valley got theirs as we lived in Phoenix until 1964 before moving to Tempe which was Sun Valley territory.

Cyberider:

Interesting! Wink

In my area (Hudson County) in the 60s, there were numerous "indy" (local) companies......

NORTH HUDSON BOULEVARD

SOUTH HUDSON BOULEVARD

(these two companies were affiliated with HUDSON BUS)

BERGEN AVENUE

DOWNTOWN BUS COMPANY

CENTRAL AVENUE

LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE (aka GREENVILLE & LAFAYETTE)

RED & TAN

(this company was also associated with HUDSON BUS)

MONTGOMERY & WEST SIDE (aka "The Red Bus")

BAYONNE BROADWAY

WASHINGTON STREET BUS COMPANY (Hoboken)

Sadly, non of these old companies exist today,,,,,,,,,, Sad

I'm pretty sure Sun Valley is long gone too. They used to run some routes up to NV instead of or maybe in addition to Greyhound. The Phoenix-Mesa line was the only suburban line they had that I'm aware of.

Cyberider:

Here in NJ, the only old company still in existence is "LAKELAND" (suburban service to the PABT)

All the others were absorbed by NJT over 40 years ago, or simply went out of business altogether............. Sad
