NYO—
When recalling the P&W, don’t forget about their use of the former North Shore “Electroliner’s”, redubbed, “Liberty Liners”…😉 |

Yes, indeed....the famed, legendary "ELECTROLINERS"!
(MIRACULOUS that BOTH trains are STILL with us today!)
I've discussed the purchase and use of these unique and handsome articulated speedsters on the former P&W with other transit buffs, and they agreed with me that these units were not well-suited for the "stop-and-go"/frequent station stops of the line (recall, these were INTERCITY trains, regularly barrelling along at 90 MPH.
Personally, I always thought that the former CNS&M units would have been better suited for high-speed service on the RDG's electrified suburban lines out of Reading Terminal.
Interestingly, the North Shore's trains were also the very last interurbans to enter the Loop via the "L" (early 1963); the CA&E's trains were cut back to an outer transfer point (connecting with CTA "L" trains) prior to the abandonment of all passenger service in 1957.
"Electroburgers" were popular (and tasty!) menu items aboard these unique and stylish trains, back in their Chicago days........

Here's a view of a newly-arrived "ELECTROLINER" at the P&W's 72nd St. shops in 1964, prior to refurbishment.
A "Red Arrow"" ACF-BRILL can just be glimpsed in the background........

This sleek "Libertyliner" indeed makes for a most impressive sight crossing the bridge at Norristown, back in 1974.......

Here we have one of the famous "Bullets" passing the 72nd St. shops back in 1970.
Note, also, the assortment of Old Looks and Fishbowls in the background.........

This rare photo shows an "ELECTROLINER" (still in its original livery) undergoing testing on P&W trackage (recall, also, that these trains were already equipped for third rail operation; trolley poles, of course, we not needed)...............

A long-gone ERA (or NRHS) fan trip seems to be in progress here at the Bryn Mawr station, back in 1972; here we have a 1930 "Bullet" alongside one of the sleek "Liberty Liners"........aaahh, the "juice jack" aura of another era!

Another "Liberty Liner" at Bryn Mawr, back in 1967.
The impressive profile of these streamlined electrics is most evident here.....

The ex-CTA 6000's indeed looked quite at home, at the former elevated Norristown terminal......

This timeless 1970 scene has two "Bullets"on the yard lead, branching off from the P&W main line, near 69th St.
Note the yard full of "RED ARROW" Old Looks and Fishbowls in the background......

The oldest P&W equipment for many years were the charming "Straffords"; these elderly cars indeed bore more than a passing resemble to the conventional streetcars of that era.
This 1970 view shows one of the "Straffords" near 69th St., with a number of "RED ARROW" buses in the yards in the background.....

And here is its sister unit (facing off with one of the old "Bullets" it ran alongside of for many years), today residing in PA, lovingly restored to its classic 1964-era "Liberty Liner" livery........BEAUTIFUL!!

It is interesting, too, to note that today's CTA "Yellow Line" (the section of the old ex-CNS&M) the former "Skokie Swift", was purchased by the CTA after the North Shore ceased operations in 1963, utilizing overhead catenary (from its opening in 1964, until third rail was installed in 2004)
This was also the very last CTA rapid transit line to use overhead wire.
This once-unique rapid transit line was the Chicago "version" of the IRT's Dyre avenue line, which opened in 1941, utilizing the abandoned (Bronx) row of the former NYW&B, which used heavy-duty MU's and was abandoned in 1937.
As was the case in Chicago, rapid transit cars began traveling along sections of row once utilized by high-speed electric trains.
Of course, the Dyre Avenue line (tied into the "main line" IRT in 1957) used third rail from the start (see following posts)
