| Thanks. If I read the right article and understood it, the race track was the reason for the viaduct and elevators existence and the viaduct, minus the elevator towers, remained many years afterward? |

Cyberider:
Correct.
After I last posted, I remembered a book I had bought years ago, that I had not read in quite awhile, that had a postcard view and information on this operation.
The book is by Arthur G. Adams, "THE HUDSON THROUGH THE YEARS"
From the book:
".....the elevators were designed by the same firm who designed those used on the Eiffel Tower. The cars had a capacity of 130 passengers, and made the trip up to the station level in 45 seconds......"
".....the four story station building featured a lofty, electrically-lit waiting room finished in mahogany. ......"
The trains were operated by the Guttenburg Steam Railway, a division of the North Hudson Railway (this was the predesscor to Public Service)......."
"...'PORTER' locomotives hauled the trains throigh a short tunnel under present-day Boulevard East, then turned north and emerged in a shallow cut near Liberty Place......"
The trains then ran north to what is today the Cliffside Park/Fort Lee border; this, in later years, became PSNJ's busy Palisades Junction, the transfer point for several busy streetcar lines until 1938......."
"....a portion of this railroad became an electrified trolley line by 1894, and the Weehawken viaduct and elevators were demolished around 1900......."
(a portion of what later became PSNJ's "PALISADE" car line followed a portion of the old ROW)

.....there have been, for many years, rumors that remnants off the old steam railroad that operated over the Weehawken viaduct still exist today in the basements/foundations of the apartmeb buildings on Boulevard East, sitting where the fomer ROW was located......

Here is a list (with many photos) on the preserved PORTER locos that still exist today;note that these engies came in many different configurations, and were used in many different capacities.
Until the early 1900s,PORTE engines also hailed elevated trains in New York; they also switched cable trains at the two terminals of the original Brooklyn Bridge Railway..............
