The last proud vestiges of the era of steam in New Jersey.....

The PRR had the distinction of operating the last steamers in New Jersey; their legendary "K-4s" hauled NY&LB trains until 1957 (II hit the planet January of that same year, born just about a mile west of the Exchange Place terminal!) Very Happy

They were replaced by the sleek, angular Baldwin "Sharks"in 1957.......

Contrasts.....

In their twilight on the NY&LB, the mighty "K-4s" made for a sharp contrast to the CNJ's double-ended Baldwins, Geeps, and "FMs".

The NY&LB's "K-4s"were serviced at the now-defunct "Meadows" engine facility at Kearmy.............

NJT's Raritan Valley line is today but a humdrum, two-track line, one with little variety and diversity.

Back in the day, this was a busy four-track main, extending all the way into Jersey City, showcasing a colorful variety of motive power and rolling stock.................

Here is an excellent historical article on "The Big Little Railroad"(CNJ)..........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Railroad_of_New_Jersey

There are photos of the Jersey Cty Terminal as it looks today (minus the four-slip, two-level ferry terminal), one of the iconic "Came;s", and a view of the facade of the Broad Street (Newark) station, also, the historicdepot at Elizabeth...............

Excellent page on the RDG; note photo of aRDG "Camel".....recall, the RDG operated the "WALL STREET" and "THE CRUSADER" to the CNJ's Jersey City Terminal until 1967, connecting with CNJ rails at Bound Brook Junction.

The 1964 photo of a RDG "FP-7" hauling a train out of Philadelphia, might have veen either of these trains.............

Looks like NJ was the place to be for train and bus action. Maybe it still is if one can tolerate the modern equipment.

Cyberider:

Nrw Jersey railroading (especially passenger) is today but a mere shel lof what it was, through the mid-1960s; so many lines have been abandoned, so many services consolidated.

In my day, passenger stations with open waiting roms and ticket agents were the norm; today, these are VERY few andf ar between.

Outside of Hoboken Terminal and Newark, the vast majority of stations have ticket vending machines only; some still have open waiting rooms, but, again, these are in the minority.

Many stations have now been sold for non-railroad use (resturants, offices, etc); many more historic depots have long ago been torn down.

After the 1967 Aldene Plan took affect, all of the local Jersey City stations (CNJ) were closed; the few stations in Bayonne 9to be used by the "Scoot" shuttle) became flag stops only.

None exist todau.

The "Scoot" was abandoned in 1978;the massive Newark Bay lift bridge was later destroyed.

Ditto the once-busy, multi-track Elizabethport station.

In late 1966, the CNJ abandoned all commuter service on the Atlantic Highlands branch.

Remaining commuter service on the NYS&W ended in July, 1966.

On the Erie-Lackawanna, in October of 1966, several through trains (including the iconic "PHOEBE SNOW") were axed.

Also, all passenger service on the Sussex Branch ended, along with passenger service on the former ERIE Northern Branch.

South Orange (M&E) ceased to be used as a terminal, and the MU yard and tower were closed.

Service on the electrified Monstlair Branch became rush-hour only.

Off-peak services were cut back on all lines, and all diesel service on Sunday ended.

Indeed, it was NOT a bright time for New Jersey's railroads and railfans, in particular,t he elimination of the once-busy commuter operations ledt a huge gap in the action.......how well I recall those days.....so much (TOO much) was eliminated.........dismal times indeed.

So much of what was abandoned back then could be providing valuable services to commuters today......

Sounds like there's not much left. But, todays riders apparently can be satisfied with free wi-fi instead of nice waiting rooms.

Cyberider:

You are correct; there is not much left, regarding NJ's rail passenger services, in comparison to what there was, 60 years ago.

So much operarional flexibility has been lost, especially with 4-track main lines being reduced to only two tracks, and so many valuablejunctions/interchanges.

Even what now constitutes as "freight" has now drastically petered out in the state, since so much industry has left NJ since the1970s.

With the exception of NJT's Hoboken (ex-Erie-Lackawanna) yards, allof the once-vast passenger and freight yards, which once ran along the Hudson from Weehawken to Jersey City, have disappeared, with virtually no trace of these massive yards remaining today.

Since the later 1980s, there have been feeble attempts to bring back commuter service on the old West Shore (NYC) and NYS&W, but, to date, nothing whatsoever has evers een the light of day......

The now-defunct Rahway Valley Railroad, was once one of the most successful short lines in the country; passenger service long, long ago fell by the wayside, but during New Jersey's industrial era, this railroad interchanged freight with the DL&W (E-L), CNJ, and LV.

At the end of operations, only one on-line customer remained................
