No, the LIRR never rostered " FL-9s", nor did they operate into Grand Central.

The "FL-9s" were unique to the NH.

Thought I'd seen videos of them operating on the LIRR in the 90's. It says they were run on Metro North prior to that. Is the FL-9 the same as an FL-9AC?

The handsome "FL-9s" were the pride and joy of the NH when new, in their flamboyant paint.....no other road had them.

I well recall them, when I was MUCH younger........ Wink

Had the PRR purchased "FL-9s"at the time the NH did, this would have allowed them to operate NY&LB trains from New York straight through to Bay Head, without the then-standard engine swap at South Amboy......

CNJ's "Liberty" herald..........

In 1944, thye CNJ adipt ed itsfamous Statue of Liberty herald; recall, the Jersey City terminal was within sight of the famous statue.

The outline of ths Statue was encircled by the legend:

"JERSEY CENTRAL LINES"

The passenger rolling stock did not receeive the new jherald.

In 1965, the Herald was changed slightly, with "CENTRAL RAILROAD COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY" replacing "JEREY CENTRAL LINES".

The new herals were not applied to the funnels of the ferries (soon to be abandoned), nor the tugs.

Passenger TTS and company stationary were also updated.

The new herads were applied to the coaches, byt, not the rDCs.

The TRAUINASTERS, retired by 169,, retained the old heralds until retirement....

Further..........

Up until 1944,the CNJ used a circular emblem with "NEW JERSEY CENTRAL" in the center; this emblem, was used on freight cars. structures, on TTs, and on the stacks of the ferryboats and tugs.

Tenders bore the following:

"C.R.R.N.J"

Coach letterbosards:

"CENTRAL RAILROAD COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY"

Postwar, most passenger equipment had "JERSEY CENTRAL LINES" carried on the letterboards; however, some cars still were lettered "CENTRAL RAILROAD COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY" until the Aldene era......

Had the famed "Blue Comet"lasted until at least through 1944 postwar era, there is a good chance that the tenders might also have also carried the new "Liberty" herald.

A number of the oldest cabooses retained the original "Liberty" heralds until retirement

The newer ones did recieve the new 1965 jerald.............

Post-Aldene CNJ passenger diesel swap.......

All of the CNJ's "RS-3s" and "Baby" Trainmasters were removed from passenger service, and were relegated to freight runs only.

The "big" Trainmasters werer retired in 1969 in 1968, replaced by new "GP-40Ps".

The "Baby" Traimasters were all retired by 1970, then mostly switching freight cars at Jersey City...........

CNJ's early push-pull era.........

It was not at all uncommon to see a cut of elderly CNJ coaches flanked by a pair of leased B&O Geeps; sometimes a CNJ Geep would be at one end, while a B&O unit was at the other end of the consist.......

CNJ's postwar diesel tug fleet were all powered by "FAURBANKS-MORSE" power plants............

The "GP-40Ps".................

These were the last new passenger power purchased for the CNJ; these 13 engines replaced a like number of Trainmasters in 1969.

Interestingly, these engines were actually purchased by the NJDOT and a B&O/C&O subsidiary, "Railease".

So uncertain was the future of CNJ commuter service at that time, it was stipulated that, if the CNJ could not make the lease payments on these engines, the B&O would repossses them, and put them into freight service........
