Atlantic City-bound............

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Comet

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_City_Express_Service

Two entirely different trains, two entirely different eras.

To this very day, the fabled "Blue Comet" is indeed, still highly regarded, as one of the most legendary and most handsome trains ever to ride the rails.

The modern-day (no longer operating) "ACES", on the other hand, is all but forgotten today, except, perhaps, by area rail enthusiasts........

Originally built in 1918 as a suburban stop, the historic and stately "Peachtree Station" is today the sole AMTRAK passenger station in Atlanta; back in the halcyon days of passenger rail travel, thelofty, now-demolished "Terminal Station" (closed 1971) served rail travelers.

Only two trains per day call at this historic little depot today..........

And we have a nice train station in downtown Phoenix but Amtrak doesn't come here anymore. Instead, they go to the town of Maricopa, about 25 miles away.

Looks more like a contemporary bus depot than a railroad station............. Sad

NOT a new concept, by ANY means......

AMTRAK's train-connection "THRUWAY" bus services has roots that indeed go deep; beginning in the 1920s, many railroads (and also number of interurbans) once operated buses in train-connection service (in South Jersey, for example, the CNJ operated train-connection service to its famed "Blue Comet" to Atlantic City; this new bus service replaced the trains which had earlier connected with the "Comet". These buses were painted in the handsome "Blue Comet" scheme).

Intil 1958, the B&O operated train-connection buses between Manhattan and Brooklyn to the CNJ terminal in Jersey City (via ferry), where trainside connection swere made.

A stately, grand, and monolithic monument to the Golden Age of American Railroading..........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_City_Union_Station

The now-demolished Bush trainsheds (which should have been saved) were identical to those at CNJ's former waterfront Jersey City terminal.

Much history and grandeur, here..............

From ABC's World News Tonight (7)..................

Massive wildfires are now raging throughout drought-ravaged Florida and Georgia.

Footage depicted an(unidentified) Amtrak train, stalled in the middle of nowhere, for over 24 hours; train was made up of "Viewliners" and "Amfleet" cars.

Frightening situation, for certain.........

If you notice in that wiki article, besides the Terminal Station serving some roads, there was also a "Union Station" serving other roads....

Never one to allow uncontested traffic in their territory, the mighty PRR also fielded its own New York to Atlantic City train they named after "Nellie Bly", the famed pioneering female reporter. It took a much longer westerly route, but the PRR's train remained competitive, and outlasted the Blue Comet... Cool

This was because the Southern Pacific ran its thru freight trains thru Maricopa on a more southerly line, and eventually abandoned part of the route thru Phoenix, before the Union Pacific acquired them.

As always, greatly appreciate your input! Wink

CNJ's famed and luxurious Jersey City-Atlantic City "Blue Comet"branched off from the NY&LB at Red Bank ("BANK" tower) and onto the CNJ's Southern Division, which, over the years, saw the end of all passenger service, but also, saw remaining freight customers fall by the wayside, with increasing frequency, over the years.

"WINSLOW JUNCTION" (once quite complex) was where the "Comet" switched off the CNJ for the last leg into Atlantic City.

Direct NYC-AC passenger service ended on the PRR sometime around 1960................

While the ICC generally permitted railroads to own and operated bus services to supplement main line services, or replace certain branch lines trains, they weren't so happy about those railroads that started or acquired large bus lines that competed with their own trains, or were run to keep other bus line start ups to compete with their trains. In 1935, the ICC started regulating motor carrier's, and those operations already in business were "grandfathered", and allowed to continue. However, since the bus industry had matured, the ICC mandated that railroads disinvest, and sell off these bus lines that basically paralleled their routes. The process finally was complete by the late 1950's. After that time, railroads could only operate buses to connect or supplement certain of their routes. A few of these lasted into the late 1970's deregulation.
