The MP-54's were classic and sure stayed on the scene for a long time. Makes me wonder why something so durable ever had to be retired.

Cyberider:

A number of the oldest LIRR "54s" (1910), and quite a few of 1915-era PRR "54s" were still running in the 1960s.

Over the years, a number of cars received upgrades, such as updated seating and lighting, and new window frames.

A number of LIRR "54s", in the 1950s, had their 2-2 seating replaced by a 3-2 arrangement, which made the aisles off-center.

In fact, a number of the original 1907-era NYCRR MUs were still running, mainly as Bronx locals.

These cars originally had stained glass arches over the windows; in later years, letterboards covered over these windows when the cars were modernized...........

In this moody 1961 photo, we see a train of heavyweight NYC MUs running on the Hudson Line.

By the time of this photo, the oldest cars (1907) were already over 50 years old.......

The NYC also operated RDCs in diesel territory, both of Croton-Harmpn; for obvious reasons, these cars were known as "Beeliners"........... Wink

These cars must have been pretty elegant in their early days. Interesting to note that the photo was taken by my friend, the late Ed Davis Sr. He also was the author of "They Moved the Millions" which was about the NYC subway and elevated systems.

Cyberider:

I have your late friend's "THEY MOVED THE MILLIONS" in my transit library; I've read it too many times to count ,over the years....EXCELLENT book! Very Happy

Speaking of the RDC, it is odd th\at the DL&W never purchased any; there were a number of branches where they would have proved feasible.

The LV had RDCs, but none operated within New Jersey ("doodlebugs" did, however)

In fact, the CNJ was the only New Jersey road to operate RDCs into a Hudson River waterfront terminal.

Too, the PRR was the only road to terminate on the Hudson River in Jersey City to have electrified commuter service provided.........

New Haven MUs...........

The NH operated a large number of MUs;most were heavyweights, but there was also a small group pf postwar MUs, built by P-S, known as "Washboards" because of their fluted sides.

For all their sleekness and modern lines, the 'Washboards" were not destined to enjoy a long service life on the NH.

The most unusual NH MUs were the steel open-platform cars that dated back to the earliest days of NH electrification.

These distinctive cars lasted into the 1950s, and looked much older than they were, which added to their charm (they recalled the narrow-gauge MUs on Boston's Revere Beach & Lynne)

These cars lasted into the the 1950s.......

NH's formidable arch-roof heavyweight MUs lasted into the early 1970s; they were similar to those operated by the RDG.

The NH's heavyweight MUs were known as "MUTTS" to train crews and shop personell............

Here we have two trains of NH's "Washboard" MUs at Port Chester, on a gloomy day, back in 1955.............

Here we see two handsome "Washboard" MUs at the New Haven yards, on a bright, sunny day, back in the late 1970s........

Pre-Penn Central, pre-AMTRAK, it would have indeed been difficult to imagine that, one day, "GG-1s" would be found at New Haven.......

Recalling now the once-proud RDC "Daylight Speedliners" of the the B&O; only one unit was spared the torch, and, thankfully, is preserved today..........
