Think of all the long-obscure bus makes that even many bus historians are not at all familiar with..........
In the mid-1920s, PSNJ rostered buses from at least 60 DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS (talk about diversity!); they also built a number of their own buses in their Plank Road Shops (Newark); as I have noted elsewhere, PS also built a number of its own streetcars,
Many of the oldest, more obscure makes of buses came from the numerous "jitney" operations which PS took over in the early/mid-1920s.
PS also purchased a fleet of gas-electrics built by ACF in 1927.
After 1925, the trend towards purchasing buses built by YELLOW went into full-swing; in fact, YELLOW more than dominated both bus and ASV fleets until the mid-1940s, when PS began purchasing GM-built buses exclusively, straight through to the TNJ era in 1971.
Interestingly, the buses purchased to replace the ASVs in 1947 and 1948 were the TD-4008s.

Remember.........
That the early PS bus operations featured a very diverse fleet indeed stems from the early "jitneys" which PS took over from "rogue" operators; many of these "buses" had been converted from sedans and touring cars.
Still others sported home-built bodies mounted on truck chassis.
PS, as noted, also built a number of streetcars in its massive Plank Road shops in Newark; they also fabricated "custom" body parts for buses that were built by other manufacturers.
As noted elsewhere, by 1930, YELLOW more than dominated the PS bus fleet, although a group of ACF buses arrived about 1927..............

These modern highway coaches operating "down under" could indeed be classified as "unorthodox", as they are equipped with special hazard lights and florescent tape for when they are operating on mining sites..........

The most obscure FLXIBLE model.........
This was the Model "C-1" intercity coach, which debuted in 1948.
This new bus bore no reemblence to the "Clippers" of that era; this model was not at all successful, and, after only eight were built, production ended in 1950............

NYO,
Any photos of the C-1? I took a quick look but found nothing. |

Cyberider:
I, also, tried to find a photo of a "C-1" online, but could find nothing.
In fact, I've only seen t,wo photos of this bus; one in "HIGHWAY BUSES OF THE 20TH CENTURY" and "FLXIBLE INTERCITY BUSES: 1924-1970"
These buses carried 37 passengers; as was noted earlier, only eight were built.
IMHO, they resembled a cross between a PREVOST and a CROWN.
When looking at it in a photo, you would not think it was a FLXIBLE coach......

Very impressive. I had no idea Fitzjohn was in the business so long and had so many models. |

traildriver:
EXCELLENT link; thanks for posting......REAL BUSES!!!
Some of the old Hudson County "indies" I grew up with rostered at least a few "oddball" FITZJOHNS; I still remember them fondly today!
The last vanished about 1966/187, when Fishbowls began replacing the oldest, non-GM buses in the "indy" fleets.
Again, GREAT LINK!

Interesting...........
The FITZJOHN "Road Runner", with the exception of the front end, clearly was inspired by the 4104.........

In my just-received copy of "GM INTERCITY COACHES" (Grams/Gold) there is a most interesting photo of one of SHORTLINE's modified "Buffalos" at Lincoln Center.
Modified for sightseeing service (with all0new windows) the distinctive look (at least to me) echoes somewhat the PREVOST "Le Mirage".
These handsome buses were dubbed the "VISTACRUISERS" (sure wish one had been preserved!)
