Cyberider:

Indeed!

Meanwhile, back on the E-L, as more and more long-distance trains were discontinued in the mid/late 1960s, the more the graceful E-8s found themselves part of the commuter power pool, which then consisted mainly of GP-7s and RS-3s.

Until about 1965, ex-ERIE ALCO "PAs" were mainly used on through trains, sometimes in a lash-up with an E-8.

They then were used in commuter service until being sent "out west" for use as freight power.

By 1971, the few remaining E-8s in passenger service were used on the Port Jervus trains; by this time, most E-8's and been re-geared for tonnage haulling.

The last non uish-pull E-L trains on the PJ line were replaced in 1974; with this retirement, no more "conventional" diesel-hauled commuter consists remained on the E-L.

Until 1971, E-8s, GP-7s, and RS-3s were the backbone of the commuter power pool..................

An old article indeed worth reading:

The January, 1988 issue of TRAINS magazine featured an excellent article (maps, photos, etc) on AMTRAK's 16th birthday.

The photos, not surprsingly, are quite nostalgic.

Motive power shown, of course, is classic, today all retired; at that time, a large percentage of the passenger fleet was still made up of classic "Heritage" cars.

The "TURBOLINERS" were still in service; one interesting photo shows the "SAN JOAQUIN" being hauled by a SANTA FE GP-35!

How greatly AMTRAK has changed, since the late 1980s; this "in depth" article by George Drury is MORE than worth a read, if you can procure a copy of this issue of TRAINS............

Here's an interesting photo from 1974, taken at Chicago............

Note the IC "covered wagon" unit, the then-new "TURBOTRAIN", and, on the right, note the assortment of cars, including a dome and an oddball, elderly heavyweight..............

Nice equipment in it's original livery. Not so much with Amtrak's.

Sorry, I can't help it. Sad

Turboliner, not TurboTrain. The former name was for the French built RTG trains that Amtrak imported, as well as the Rohr built RTL versions that followed.
The Turbo Train was the earlier train with the power dome cars built by United Aircraft and Pullman.

traildriver:

For whatever reason, I STILL make that mistake! (TurboTRAIN/TurboLINER).......don't ask me why! Razz

The TurboLINER always reminded me of the modern "TEE" trainsets that ran on European rails, back in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and into the early 1980s.

If you look at the "ACELA", especially the new "Liberty" trainsets, you can easily see the distinct "Euro" influence, recalling the "TGVs" that began operating in the 1980s (Gee, has been THAT long already ?)Rolling Eyes
