The end of an era............
On this date in 1970, very last E-L through train, "THE LAKE CITIES", departed Track #8 at Hoboken, bound for Dearborn Station, Chicago.
Two E-8s were in charge of the train; with the demise of the "LAKE CITIES", all vestiges of E-L long-haul passenger service ended.
This train was also the last E-L train to carry a diner and sleepers.
Only several years earlier, the railroad was still operating a number of through trains out of the ancient, echoing, copper-clad Hoboken terminal.
By this time, the ferries to Barclay Street Manhattan had already been gone over two years; commuter services, also, had been drastically cut on several lines, in late 1966..............

Electrification south of DC.........
From time to time, over the years, I've read discussions/opinions on what the NEC would be like if electrification were to be extended south of DC, where electrification has always terminated.
I've read of some who thought of NEC electrification reaching at least as far south as Atlanta.
Of course, realistically, it is highly unlikely that NEC electrification will ever be extended south of DC; it is, however, a most interesting "what if" to ponder (imagine seeing GG-1s being seviced at Atlanta?)

With the old 1930 Atlanta Union Station now long gone, this historic station (handsomely restored inside and out) is today the only railroad station in Atlanta; interestingly, the style of the building echoes several former NYC stations, especially in the electrified commuter zone, out of GCT.

With PRR electrification ending at DC, this was the sourthernmost point on the railroad to see GG1s; these photos of "Gees" at DC (Ivy City yards) date to the early 1960s.
After the NH became part of the Penn-Central in 1969, New Haven became the northermost location to spot these iconic electrics...........

It is indeed interesting (and ironic) to think of a huge city iike Atlanta now being served by what had once been a suburban station, with only ONE track; indeed, a true comedown from the now-demolished 1930 Union Station, with its cavernous station headhouse and multiple tracks.
Times change, indeed.............

Here's a nostalgic 1940s-era view of the old (long-ago demolished) Union Station in Atlanta, with its stately, lofty headhouse.
A number of classy through trains, operated by several "fallen flags", once served this historic depot; last trains pulled out the day before AMTRAK took over in 1971..........

Indeed!
Those "classic era" stations were indeed true monuments, "Cathedrals of Commerce", for certain.
Back in the day, Tiffany glass, Italian marble, copper, wrought iron, oak, mahogany, brass, bronze.........all of these were used without stint at the "big city" stations, not to mention a number of those stations serving commuters.
It was, after all, a time when true craftsmen, men who indeed took great pride in their work, were still commonplace
Alas, that was light-years ago, for certain............

Thanks for the pic!
Now you have me thinking of what a "Gee" might have looked like in classic "Crescent" paint(!!)
Would HAVE to be QUITE eye-catching, to say the least!
I am now remembering an ad that mORE impressed me greatly as a lad, from an early 1960s issue of either MR or RMC, with a page showing HO train sets; one of which was a (heavyweight) New Haven passenger set, led by a "Gee" in FULL New Haven McGuiness colors!!!
To this very day, I not only wish I had this flamboyant electric in my collection, but also, I STILL imagine a "Gee" sporting NH's flamboyant McGuinness colors..................WOW!!

Speaking of "Gees"............
Until their retirement in 1983 (when NJT extended electrification south from South Amboy to Matawan), "Gees" lay over at the South Amboy "motor yard", along with the MU's that served the South Amboy locals.
The GG-1s from New York were cut off southbound (westbound) North Jersey Coast (NY&LB) trains, where diesels were subbed; the electrics would then move to the "motor yard", to await the arrival of the next New York-bound train.
The old "motor yard" at South Amboy has long since been abandoned; this classic photo dates back to 1981.
Nowadays, of course, South Amboy is just another station on the NJCL, with engine changeovers now gone over 40 years......

By the late 1970s, the NJDOT purchased several E-8s from the SOUTHERN; to say these graceful, proud locos were quite easy on the eye was indeed an understatement!
They hauled NJCL (NY&LB) trains between South Amboy and Bay Head, until they were retired.
The former through coaches they hauled indeed represented several fallen flags, including:
SANTA FE
MISSOURI PACIFIC
ROCK ISLAND
KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN
These photos from 1981 recall the handsome ex-SOUTHERN engines at South Amboy.............

Recalling when commuter rail operations were both diverse and interesting......
Back in the 1970s, there was a time when the ex-FLORIDA EAST COAST observation car ("SAINT LUCIE SOUND") was purchased by the NJDOT and was used as a club car on certain NY&LB/NJCL rush hour trains!
This classic streamlined observation car was also (understandably!) quite popular with railfan groups on weekend fantrips.............
