Hard to believe that the first stages of the desecration of the once-grand "Port-of-Authority" were taking place some 44 years ago........man, how well I recall seeing that desecration "foist" hand, beginning that long-ago summer of 1980.....and to think that it had once been called "the most beautiful bus station in the world"..........so much for "progress"......... Razz

Similar to the original New York Penn Station before its demolition and after Madison Square Garden IV was put up in its place, upon which a columnist wrote: "One entered the city like a god; one scuttles in now like a rat." Same could be said of the "Pabt" in the transition from its original appearance in 1950 to its "improvements"[sic] in 1980, and now this.

W.B.:

The insanity of it all is that the insanity continues to prevail, in all aspects of transit design.......nothing whatsoever that could even remotely described as "attractive" (and barely functional, at that) Razz

Funny, from the time I was just a kid, whenever I'd see photos of the Guggeneheim (or see it from the outside), the sleek, "moderne" facade always reminded me a bit (in the abstract) of the old "Port-of-Authority's" 8th Avenue facade (funny, Mom also thought likewise!) Wink

For what it's worth..........

(Note: the building was built between 1956 and 1959, years after the "Port-of-Authority" had been completed and had been well-established)

On this day in 1950..........

What was once known as "The Most Beautiful Bus Station In The World" opened, in all of its sleek, gleaming, stunning "Moderne" glory.

Hard to believe that the old "Port-of-Authority" opened nearly 75 years ago.

A lot of great old memories for Your's Truly, regarding this once-magnificent station (and the buses which served it!)....... Wink

See laudatory story in NY Times, December 2, 1951. Four good dining services and a swank bar.

Joe:

When I was quite small, I well recall passing by the then-posh "POST & COACH" (my godmother once went to a wedding reception there, in the early 1960s)

There was also a bowling alley on one of the upper (suburban) levels) if I am not mistaken.

At this time of year, I can still see the huge holiday decorations hanging from the ceiling, as well as still hearing the carols sung by the various glee clubs.

Too, I vividly recall the sizeable crowds at the GREYHOUND, TRAILWAYS, and other "long-haul" ticket counters, purchasing tickets to go home for the holidays.

Indeed, it was a different time.....and a different world, to be sure...........I'm certainly fortunate I have so many wonderful memories........ Very Happy

And to think Greyhound didn't arrive and leave at the PABT until the demolition of the original New York Penn Station (across from which they had a terminal for decades) began in 1963.

Mom and I visited both the old midtown GREYHOUND terminal and the original Penn Station many times in my much, much younger days (I STILL have a few tin "Hounds" Mom bought me there, well over 60 years ago, now!) Wink

The former GREYHOUND terminal was indeed a sad sight, closed and boarded up, as it awaited demolition. Sad

For decades, "DIXIE TERMINAL" in Cincinatti was kin to not only our "Port-of-Authority", but also, the old PS Terminal in Newark., and San Francisco's old Transbay Terminal.

Like the PS Terminal, this once-busy facility served streetcars. trolley buses, and motor buses.

Tee opulent, truly breathtaking central arcade is indeed a work of art; the last buses departed Dixie Terminal back in the 1990s.............

Here's an interesting circa-1940s "action" shot (Dixie Terminal) that indeed recalls the old PS Terminal in Newark.........

Another fascinating place that would have been a good place to hang out and watch all the action.

Cyberider:

Agreed......

"Dixie Terminal" HAD to have been a wonderful place to "hang out", back in the day, to see all of that intense streetcar/trolleybus/bus activity.

Many years back, BUS WORLD magazine did an excellent feature on the terminal.

Too, recall that Cincinatti's streetcars used double-overhead (as did the trams in Havana), and, of course, the trolley buses.

At least that main buildings still stand, unlike the old PS Terminal in Newark, and the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco, both of which have long since been demolished.............

We share a common memory...

My mom used to drag me from our apartment in Brooklyn on the BMT to Herald Square to shop in Macy*s, Gimbel's, and other stores in "the city".
One day, as a reward for my patience, she let me drag her over to the Pennsylvania Greyhound Terminal to see the brand new Greyhound Scenicruiser, on public display in 1954. The line literally strectched around the block. After viewing the incredible coach, we received a bagful of Greyhound timetables and brochures, and other 'goodies'. We went back three years later to view the "Golden Greyhound", converted-4104 luxury liner, with only two and one seating, a snack bar, and other amenitiesl. These were extra fare coaches used on SEG's "Sun King Limited", schedules between the midwest and Florida, for a short period in the late '50's.

I was fortunate to do just that, on one of my 'weekend' trips using my newly obtained annual pass, in 1968. One detail of that terminal that sticks in my mind was there was a low wall around the inside of the loop the buses made inside that building, and built into that wall was a series of grills that covered a bunch of very powerful exhaust blowers that were installed when the operation went from trolley cars and buses to diesel powered ones. They did a pretty good job of keeping the air clear. Back then, bus exhaust pipes were usually under the rear of the bus, pointed toward the left side.
