(SEE PREVIOUS PHOTOS)
This derailment at Empire Boulevard (formerly Malbone Street) in 1974 indeed served as a haunting reminder of the 1918 disaster............

No details given as to how this unfortunate "R-12" ended up as it did (207th Street yard, 1971)
Had to have been a story, here...........

Wrecks, in whatever form they come in, are always interesting. That doesn't mean I'd want to participate in them, though! |

Agreed, 100%!
Vintage transit-related wreck photos (buses included) are indeed QUITE interesting, but then, you think of those unfortunate folks who were either severely injured or killed.
The LIRR suffered TWO deadly head-on collisions in ONE year (1950); the heavyweight "MP-54" MUs were turned into heaps of twisted and shredded metal by the impacts; the loss of life was beyond a tragedy.
Such head-ons would be even more deadly today, with the modern MUs so lightly built, in comparison to the solid steel cars of many decades back...........

In this circa-1930s view, we see the aftermath of a serious altercation between a B&QT double-ended 8000-series Peter Witt and a fire truck.
Indeed hope no one perished in this accident........

Awaiting scrapping in the mid-1950s, this unfortunate NYCTA bus must have been in a serious accident, to have this much damage inflicted..........

Yes, I've seen pictures of the one rostered by "PE".
Nowadays, "big hooks" in the traditional sense, are only found in rail museums.
These days, the "big hooks" are most usually conventional trucks/hi-rail vehicles.
Of course, "big hooks" were far too large to help clean up most underground accidents; this is where cutting torches and flatbed work cars (to cart away the cut-up wreckage) were extensively used.......
