W.B.:

You and I are on the same page, here.

I was also thinking "See-En-Gee" (CNG), giving the ferocious intensity of the blaze, and the near-total consumption of the bus' body by the blaze; the news footage and photographs indeed reveal a VERY intense fire for sure.

So senseless, idiotic, and unwarranted........

On this EXHAUSTIVE site, click on the link for buses in television shows; check out the photos on the "TWILIGHT ZONE" page......

www.busesonscreen.net/screen/index.php

Note photos the Culver City Municipal Bus Lines "Jetson" Fishbowl used in two TZ episodes, one featuring a young Carol Burnett; ironically, in her memoirs, Carol relates how she almost always got bus sick, from the time she was a little girl! Shocked

Note the other episode, "STEEL", featuring the legendary Lee Marvin (those were the days of REAL buses and REAL actors!) Wink

Sidenote:

ACF-BRILLS (aka "Rocky BRILL-Boa") seemed to have been in the ultra-minority in California.

WHITES, on the other were QUITE popular, especially with MUNI and the KEY SYSTEM.

MACKS ("Pattons") were also to be found in the MUNI fleet, and GREYHOUND's commuter network out of San Fransisco )GREYHOUND utilized "suboiban" MACKS and Old Looks as well as (in later years) Fishbowls.

MUNI, unlike the LAMTA/SCRTD, seemed to have no interest in the lowly "Dangerfield"..........

"Dangerfield" phobia?

Just as "El-Yay" embraced the Flxible New Look beginning in the 1960s, San Francisco was the total opposite.

Not only was MUNI not at all interested in them, but also, "AC TRANSIT" (ex-"KEY", later "SamTrans")

In the 1960s, their large fleet consisted of only "Gee-Em" built buses; even later on, when they began to "diversify", the company still remained steadfast in not purchasing any "Dangerfields".

"Shik-aga", on the other hand.............Wink

......I have been looking at more photos of the Los Angeles bus that was recently destroyed by that massive fire set by a band of highly-destructive, drunken, violent, mindless individuals.

The more online photos I look at, and the more I see just how utterly intense the blaze was, I am leaning more and more towards that this unfortunate bus as being a CNG unit.

I've been trying to find out not only the type of bus involved, but also, it's number (I only know that this was an MTA bus)

So far, I've turned up nothing else.................

W.B.:

You GOTTA wonder just how "user friendly" all these "clean air/hybrid" buses are, especially when said bus is involved in a serious accident........IMHO, I think there is MUCH the general riding public is not at all aware of..........

"See-En-Gee"..........

From photos I have seen, CNG buses with the pods mounted on the roof had a tendency to "list" when making a tight turn; then, you think, "OK, we'll just put the tanks under the floor".

Fine and dandy......BUT what happens when such buses are running on roadways that are, shall we say, NOT conducive to a smooth, non-jolting, bus ride..............

I am almost giving up on finding the model of the bus that was set on fire in downtown Los Angeles. I did see on YouTube a lengthy view of the riots, culminating in the firey bus. The film depicts a downtown gone crazy with crowds and dangerous fireworks.

Mayhem leading to bus fire

Joe:

I've tried (yet again) to try to see if I could track down the make and model of that destroyed bus; needless to say, I keep on coming up empty-handed the only other thing I can think of is seeing if there is a California-based bus/transit forum, where it would seem SOMEONE would know the details on the torched bus.....

W.B.:

Indeed an UNDERSTATEMENT, my friend! Wink

I now wonder if the "See-Tee-Yay" ever regretted the purchase of nearly 1,000 postwar TWINS ("Oddballs") all of which were propane powered.

From what I've read, these buses were expensive to operate, were poor performers, and VERY sluggish in acceleration (the ACF-BRILLS, and MACKS probably performed better! Wink

Recall, also, that outside of the handful "inherited" from the "See-Es-El", the only Old Looks that were on the CTA roster were those buses that originally were rostered by CMCCo...................

As this is a baseball-related thread, I must bring up the death of music legend Quincy Jones at age 91. As a young whippersnapper in '54, he worked with the great Willie Mays and paired him with a vocal group, The Treniers, on the Epic label, for a number, "Say Hey! (The Willie Mays Song)" which was released in the wake of his breakthrough year (and his team, the Giants, winning their last World Championship while still in "Noo Yawk"):

Given Mr. Mays' own death earlier this year, Mr. Jones' tertiary connection really does close the book on the old Polo Grounds.
