New York Trailways and Greyhound have four months to find a location for an interim bus terminal now that Midtown Plaza is closed. Midtown has been the home for the Trailways terminal for 46 years now and that is coming to an end. The old Greyhound terminal at 320 Andrews Street has been ruled out since it is said to be too far gone to be rehabbable and will have to be torn down. It has been suggested that they relocate to the Amtrak train station at 320 Central Avenue. With 24 buses a day in and out of the current terminal a day, I do not see how they could make the Amtrak station location work, especially since some buses layover for hours between runs and you gotta park'em somewhere. Amtrak looks to me like the station could do at best, one or two buses at a time. Sometimes a half dozen or more buses are in the station at one time and Amtrak's current station cannot handle it from the layout of its roadways and parking lots. I am sure Trailways will figure out something. This story is turning out to be one most interesting one to watch. Stay tuned. |
