GREYHOUND bus purchases (prewar/postwar)

Pre-GM, GREYHOUND was a loyal YELLOW customer; MACKS and WHITES also were part of the ever-increasing GREYHOUND fleet.

After the War, GREYHOUND was purchasing new GM's, as well as ACF-BRILLS, and FLXIBLE's.

When the last ACF-BRILL and FLXIBLE coaches were retired, GREYHOUND became an all-GM property.

This prevailed through the purchases of the "Buffalos" in the late 1960's, although early MCI's were quickly becoming commonplace.

With GM now effectively out of the picture, GREYHOUND's once-diverse fleet was now almost entirely MCI, with the exception of the EAGLE coaches that had previously operated for TRAILWAYS.

Then, as more PREVOSTS were purchased, the fleet was no longer all MCI.

If GREYHOUND (what remains of it), somehow, continues to roll on, it will be interesting to see what manufacturer the company will choose for its new purchases.......

Even a die-hard "traditionalist" like Your's Truly admits that this modern PREVOST indeed makes for a QUITE handsome "hound"....... Wink

And, for a touch of nostalgia, here's the ever-timeless 4106, indeed one of GREYHOUND's most unsung workhorses....... Very Happy

The formidable MC-6 was always a favorite of mine; the rugged, tough, no-nonsense "better get oudda da way, pal!" appearance of these fearsome-looking buses always appealed to me.

Though they originally were assigned to East Coast routes, GREYHOUND later sent them out to California; they were retired in 1080.

In tin toy form, the MC-6 is a quite rare bird; I have only one in my collection, at present (numbered #8999); these arenow very rare pieces, to say the least.

Two prototypes were built in 1967, and production began in 1969; a total of 100 buses were built.

After GREYHOUND, these big bruisers were sold to private companies......

Here's a side view of the vintage tin friction toy "6" I mentioned earlier; it is the only one that I currently have in my ever-growing GREYHOUND collection......

........just received my long-desired copy of William A. Luke's "GREYHOUND BUSES PHOTO ARCHIVE"; I just flipped through it quickly, and can see that the book is MORE than worth the very reasonable price I paid (I STILL wish, however, there had been a SCENICRUISER on the cover, though!) Wink

As expected, there are several excellent "6" photos that I had not seen previously; one photo shows a new "6" with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

".......the MC-6 was to be the next generation Greyhound bus, presumably to replace the successful reign of the Scenicruiser. However, the bus was ahead of its time....."

"........the MC-6 had a 102-inch width, which was not legal in most states. Also, the Detroit Diesel V-12 engines proved unsatisfactory, due to high fuel consumption. In 1973, these engines were replaced by V-8 engines, and automatic transmissions were installed in most buses. In Canada, 15 of the MC-6 type continued to be operated with the original V-12 engines....."

*Here is an interesting rear view of a "6"; the bus is numbered #8999, which is the SAME number as the vintage tin friction version I have in my collection!
