ERA/NRHS fantrips of yore.........
Countless old photos (and home movie footage) depict the railroad, rapid transit, and streetcar fantrips of many years ago.
Many practices would be unthinkable today, given the fear of liability lawsuits and potential accidents.
Think of how railfans were once allowed to wander through rail shops and car houses, complete with grease and oil-slick floors, tools and other assorted items laying about.
UNTHINKABLE today, for certain.
Beyond fantrips, recall when El passengers were allowed to ride on the open platforms of gate cars, in everyday service?
This practice was one my mother clearly remembered as a girl, especially on trips out to Coney Island from Park Row.
Fantrips, as they were, virtually no longer exist, due to the aftereffects of COVID, corporate financial woes, and a slew of other issues.
The MTA's historic subway fleet sees little use nowadays; it has now been years now since the vintage buses in the MTA's historic fleet have operated.
It's another world now, altogether...........

1969 was a sad year for NY-area railfans; in that year, the old Myrtle Avenue El was closed, thus spelling doom for the old "Q" cars, then the last wooden cars in regular passenger service.
That same year, the famed BMT "Standards" made their final runs, as did the last prewar IRT equipment, by then only being used on the Bronx 3rd Avenue El.
Both the ERA and NRHS were quite busy that year, for certain.
Here are two photos of fans out in force to say "farewell" to the old "Q" cars.......

The ERA was out in full force to bid a sad farewell to the beloved IRT "Lo-V's", when they were retired from "mainline" IRT service in 1964.

I loved these old cars (and always will); my first subway ride (1961) with Mom were aboard these venerable old cars; I still remember the last we rode them (in 1964) on the now-defunct Bowling Green-South Ferry shuttle.
I am VERY fortunate indeed to have a restored set of Lo-V markers, which I now use as night lights in my kitchen.........
The "Lo-V's" always reminded me of the old H&M "Black" cars, which Mom and I rode often, when I was growing up.
I'm VERY grateful for all of my wonderful transit memories from so long ago.....how much "living history" I was able to experience, at a tender age!

Here's PCC #1028 on a 1956 fantrip, just prior to the last streetcars running in Brooklyn......

As noted previously, none of the B&QT streetcar routes that crossed the "Willy B" ever utilized PCC's; whenever a PCC was spotted crossing the Bridge, or, at the underground Delancey St. terminal, you knew that the car was running a fantrip, and not in revenue service........

9th Avenue depot, 1955; here we have a group of classic-era "juice fans", quite busy with their cameras........

During 1961, fantrips were held prior to the retirement of BMT's articulated "Multi-Section" cars; ironically, cars older then these still-not-so-old units would soldier on for some years more.
Like the 1925 "D"-type "Triplex" units, the NYCTA was anxious to retire "non standard" trains like these, by the 1960's.
Interestingly, the handsome, speedy "Multi's"were then the only subway cars in New York that had full-width cabs, and no railfan windows (this is, of course, the rule today, on all current rolling stock).........

The distinctive and fearsome-looking "D"-type Triplex units of 1925 served the BMT faithfully until they were retired in 1965, after 40 years of service (many believe these rugged old trains could have easily served for some years yet, had the TA not retired them as "non-standard" equipment)
Of course, fantrips were held to allow fans to say "farewell" to these stalwart and familiar old trains.........

Earlier, I'd mentioned that PCC's requiring heavy repairs were sent to the DE KALB shops, prior to 1949.
Here is a rare photo showing a PCC and a single-ended 6000-series car, up on shop trucks, at the De Kalb shops.........

B&QT trivia.......
Fresh Pond depot*, for many years, served as the BoT's training school for motormen.
Originally, during the BRT days, the training school was located at the n58th St. depot.
As in the 58th St. depot, full-scale, actual size "models" of the various types of Brooklyn cars were made.
The 58th St. depot had an almost-complete replica of a 5000-series center-entrance car; De Kalb had a full-size model of the front of a PCC (numbered #1000)
De Kalb also had a larger PCC model, numbered #1947; from what I have read, this mock-up was used to rehabilitate patients in the use of public transit.
The mock roller curtains displayed: "REHABILITATION" and "BELLEVUE HOSPITAL".
True craftsmanship was clearly evident in these highly-authentic streetcar mock-ups.
The following photo (circa-1940's) shows an interesting variety of rolling stock at the Fresh Pond yards; streetcars vanished from this facility in 1950.......
