This fascinating view of the Sands Street station complex dates to 1939.

On the extreme right, a BMT "C" unit can be seen; peering into the gloom of the cavernous station, a Peter Witt can also be seen in the distance........

Here is another view of the huge Sands St. station, circa-late 1930's.

The motorman of the B&QT convertible, at this point, is not encountering any motor traffic, nor pedestrians........

Here's an impressive lineup of cars at the Crosstown depot; every car a classic example of early 20th-century streetcars.......... Very Happy

This postwar photo shows two Peter Witts, after the morning rush hour, being positioned at the 9th Avenue car house for mid-day layup, where they will rest until the PM rush arrives.

The last of these cars were retired in 1954......

The infamous blizzard of December of 1947 impacted every mode of public transport in the New York area; this, of course, wreaked havoc with streetcar and bus operations, especially...........

This timeless and nostalgic scene depicting the Williamsburgh Bridge Plaza trolley station (obviously taken during a rush hour) has two older deck roof cars virtually lost amid a sea of 8000-series Peter Witts,

This facility was indeed busy enough to warrant its own interlocking tower, as seen here.

Up above, a train of BMT "Standards" is seen rumbling and clattering above the hubbub and bustle of the crowded trolley station below.........

In this 1930's photo of the sprawling De Kalb shops (where the heavy repairs to the PCC fleet were carried out until the facility closed in 1949) the familiar deck roof convertibles dominate................

Circa-late 1940's, we see two PCC's and (just barely glimpsed) a 6000-series single-ended Peter Witt awaiting departure from Park Row, after the BMT el terminal above had been demolished.

The old deck roof car on the right was then stationed at Park Row, used as a waiting room, for trolley passengers, during inclement weather.........

Earlier in this topic, I posted a link to a still from "TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE" (1942), showing a B&QT PCC* caught in traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, after "Tarzan's" taxi was pulled over by police.

I just received my dvd copy, and wanted to see the BB scenes firsthand.

There is also a very quick scene where, through the taxicab window, an 8000-series Peter Witt can be seen.

In the scene with the PCC, you can just glimpse a B&QT 5100-series "Bulldog"/"Muzzle Loader" (heading for Brooklyn) in the background.......

*(The PCC is signed for the #67)

Here at the 9th Avenue depot's lover level, side-by-side, we see PCC #1032 and Peter Witt #8361, making for an interesting comparison between the two types of cars, built many years apart.........

Peter Witt 8361 is only eleven years older than 1032. I wonder whether the Brooklyn Peter Witts originally had conductors. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Witt_streetcar

I vaguely recall riding in a two-man PCC on Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, after the war. The conductor was just before the exit doors. Note that the design was to minimize dwell time, something horrible on many NYC buses.

Joe:

CSL/CTA also had two-man PCC's, as you already know; your comment, though, got me to thinking.

Recall, in Brooklyn, the more modern-6000's (single-ended) were retired in 1951, three years before the last double-ended 8000's made their final runs.

The Brooklyn 8000's were one-man cars from the start (this according to "BROOKLYN TROLLEYS" (Greller/Watson)

That was why, in the early years of 8000's operation, there was a distinctive "spider web" design on the dash; this was to let riders know that they were one-man cars (the only other one-man cars in Brooklyn at that time were the Birneys.

As built, the 6000's were equipped with entrance turnstiles..........
