A bit "off topic", but too good NOT to post here! Wink

Check out this "traffic jam" scene on the Brooklyn Bridge, from 1942's "TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE" (1942)

Note the B&QT PCC in full view in this scene; look closely in the background, and you can just glimpse an older streetcar, and a hint of the Park Row BMT El terminal.......... Very Happy

Regarding the photo I posted of a B&QT PCC on the Brooklyn Bridge, from "TARZAN'S NEW YORK ADVENTURE" (1942)......

Only two years after this film debuted, the transit picture on the Brooklyn Bridge began to change drastically.

In 1944, the BMT El trains were cut back to the Brooklyn side, and the streetcars shifted over to the former El tracks.

The area(s) where the streetcar tracks ran was converted into additional vehicular lanes.

Then, in 1950, the most drastic change of all came when the streetcars stopped running over the span, cut back to the Brooklyn side (oddly, no replacement buses ran over the bridge, after the streetcars were cut back)

The steel trusswork that separated the former El tracks and the roadways were removed, creating yet another vehicular lane in either direction.

After the El trains stopped running, the massive Park Row and Sands Street stations were demolished, including the elevated train storage yards near the former Sands St. station complex.

Today, no trace remains of the either the El trains or the streetcars that once crossed the mighty Brooklyn Bridge.....Sad

Too bad the "Tee-Yay" never rostered postwar ACF-BRILLS, which were commonplace here in "Joisey" for years; these were the "Rocky BRILL-boas" which made it clear to ALL motorists that they were NOT to be messed with! Shocked

.....have long been curious as to, when the B&QT streetcars ceased running over the Brooklyn Bridge in 1950, why BoT buses did not replace them, with bus loops at Park Row?

Both the Willy B and the Manhattan Bridges still carry subway trains, and I know that MTA buses cross the 59th St. (Queensboro) Bridge today.

Going further back in time, the QB Ry streetcars crossed the QB until 1957; 2nd Avenue El trains crossed the span until 1942.........

No doubt the reasons why buses did not traverse the Brooklyn Bridge after the end of streetcar service are lost to history. But one wonders if City Hall in Manhattan may've NIMBY'd the buses over the Bridge. After all, the Manhattan side of the Bridge is within the grounds of City Hall. And Bill O'Dwyer was on the cusp of being forced out as Mayor, and replaced with Vincent Impellitteri. One wonders if Robert Moses ixnayed the idea of buses traveling across the Bridge.

Good points, all.

I would NOT be surprised if Mr. Moses (certainly, NO champion for public transit) had a hand in having replacement buses not operating over the BB, after the streetcars stopped crossing the span (recall, too, how LaGuardia despised both elevateds AND streetcars) Sad

I THINK I recall reading somewhere, long ago, that, after the els and streetcars were removed from the Brooklyn Bridge, transfers were issued between the subways and the remaining El lines and streetcars on the Brooklyn side.

This is sticking in my head, but certainly cannot say this practice was actually so........
