Musings......

Just wondering if there is any maximum length limits for cruise ships/liners?

It would seem that a cruise ship can only be just so long.

Too, are there any limits (for cruise ships) regarding overall height?

I often think of some of the biggest ship being just a mite "top heavy", when it comes to sailing through stormy seas and winds......

There are no limits theoretically, but practically there are...
The ship must be able to navigate thru the waterways and ports that it will serve, including ability to make turns, turn around, suitable docking location, ability to pass under any bridges, etc.

The larger and higher the ship, the less places it can navigate.
'
Modern cruise ships may appear to be "top-heavy", but due to sound engineering, they really aren't as top heavy as they appear. They are affected more by strong winds, however...

traildriver:

Appreciate the information, as always....thanks! Wink

You brought up a very valid point about navigating harbor waters and docking facilities; about 12 years ago, when Mom was in a rehab center on the Hudson, I saw what I thought was a new riverfront condo complex, jutting out into the Hudson, on the Manhattan side.

Imagine my surprise when (I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me!) when this huge object began to MOVE out into the Hudson!!! Shocked

After a few seconds, I then realized that what I was seeing was a CRUISE SHIP, setting sail! Shocked

WOW!!!!!!!

It always amazes me at how, ships of this monothlithic size, often do not require tugboats to assist in docking; you and I are both old enough to remember when the old liners always docked and set sail assisted by several stalwart tugs!

I know that this has to do with modern propulsion (and complex) technology; I've read that the MS DREAMWARD was equipped with twin (BECKER) rudders (which could be set for nonsynchronized operation.

Recall, over 40 years ago, how novel and hi-tech the "BARBERI" and the "NEWHOUSE" were (on the Staten Island run) with their cyclodial pitch ("eggbeater") props?

Indeed, state-of-the-art for 1980! Wink

Speaking of cruise ship propulsion systems, this page (w/photos) is quite interesting and most informative.....

.....with all the "going green" these days, it is interesting to consider what "green" fuels the next generation of cruise ships will be using.

Recall the old liners (and other vessels) that burned coal, and later, oil*; then, DIESEL was the last word in modern fuel.

Today, of course (as it is with buses) diesel power is now in its twilight, at least, in the form we have known it for so many decades, now.....

*Recall, that the Staten Island Ferry's "AMERICAN LEGION" (I) of 1926, was the first oil-burner in the fleet.......

It will be interesting to see just how much the LNG-powered vessels will develop, in the future.......

.......with Hurricane Ian now wreaking havoc across Florida (and the south) I am sure that this has put a bit of a "crimp" in cruise ship operations......

........one can only imagine what it is like for those folks forced to take an "extended cruise" on a ship that cannot dock due to a powerful storm*.

It would have to be daunting, not only for the passengers, but, also, for the staff and crew, trying to avoid food/water shortages, indeed, would be a major issue, for certain.

If the ship is idle, at least SOME fuel is being conserved; however, one must remember the fuel consumed by the generators supplying light and other essential services.,.....

"NYO"

*One can only imagine the situations on board the five stranded ships, discussed in the link I provided in the previous post......

With the destructive (and, sadly, deadly) Hurricane Ian now a memory, and most COVID-related restrictions being lifted, let us hope that the battered cruise ship companies will FINALLY, after two years, be once again charting smooth, tranquil seas, and will see rebounds within the sector......
