I added a few more photo links to Pittsburgh...

As you might have guessed, Wink , I am particularly fond of that location, with many great memories of that wonderful city, and its transportation infrastructure... Smile

Remember, too, that, until the 1960's, Pittsburgh was still very much a STREETCAR city, rostering the (AFAIK) then-largest fleet of PCC's in the country......

You're the man for the following......

In the classic Gregory Peck film, "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD", the story is set in a fictional town in Alabama, during the early/mid-1930's.

What GREYHOUND lines would have served Alabama, back in those days?

Regionals?

In Glen Campbell's autobio, "RHINESTONE COWBOY", he describes the long bus journey from Delight, Arkansas, to Casper, Wyoming, in the early 1950's, involving many transfers, and taking three days to complete.

Again, am interested what companies might Glen and his uncle might have traveled by.

From "A BUS OF MY OWN" (Jim Lehrer)......

".....TRANS STATE TRAILWAYS (in Newton, Kansas, their buses stopped at a cab stand) had gone bankrupt, trying to replace some of the Kansas routes abandoned by Greyhound and Trailways in the late 70's and early 80's....."

Any info on TRANS STATE?

As always, greatly appreciate your always detailed input......Wink

Unfortunately, my 'archives' are still stored in my cousin's house in New York, so I can't give you an accurate answer, other than what's in 'the top of my head'...

Alabama would have been served by Southeastern GL and its predecessors in that era.

Not sure which line directly served Delight, AR., could have been SWG, or Missouri Pacific Trailways, or maybe Crown Coach...or some other, but I am pretty sure that he would have arrived in Casper on ABL which acquired Burlington Trailways in 1946, and was itself acquired by Continental Trailways in 1953. There are several possible routes from Arkansas to Wyoming, so without more intermediate points, hard to guess which way.

I vaguely recall seeing Trans States table in the Russell's Guide, but they didn't really run very much or far, IIRC. Need to consult a period Guide to be sure.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

You were MORE than helpful, my friend....the information you provided was MORE than I knew, and, at least, gives me a general idea of what the intercity bus picture was like in those areas, back in that era....thanks again! Wink

"FEARSOME" is indeed the word that best describes this monolithic SANTA FE TRAILWAYS sleeper coach (again, only the TOUGHEST of men could "tame" this hulking behemoth)......

Check out this eye-catching European "observation coach" from 1951; there are echoes of such coaches from here the States, from way back in the 1930's......

This 1930's "stateside" view makes for an interesting comparison to the European coach in the previous post; indeed, a design far ahead of its time.....

It is certainly a 'Duplex', but more like a "day coach"...no berths, just seats, from what it appears to me....

Some great stuff in there!
Back when they used glamourous starlets to promote new coaches. Imagine something like that today...wait...buses and glamour? Oh, never mind... Rolling Eyes
