Though Brooklyn's open streetcars vanished after the 1932 summer season, "open air" rides were still available through the B&QT's large fleet of convertibles, which lasted well into the late 1940's.

As mentioned earlier, the BMT's "BU" convertible El cars lasted until 1958, on the Myrtle Avenue El.

These were, also, the very last "gate cars" in service in New York.....

In this timeless 1942 photo, we see a train of veteran BMT convertible El cars (in Fulton line service) in the company of a sleek PCC, on Brooklyn Bridge trackage.

When the El trains stopped crossing the bridge in 1944, the streetcars were shifted over to the former El tracks, after third rails and signals were removed.

As noted elsewhere here, streetcar service over the Bridge ended in 1950.

Here's a rare photo from 1939 showing several 8100-series Peter Witts (double-ended) laying over at the Fresh Pond yards; note the stone firewalls between the sets of tracks.

Also, the "TO WORLD'S FAIR" dash signs; this was a premium service from downtown Brooklyn, but did not last long.

B&QT was ordered to stop this service, as it violated the City's 5 cent fare franchise......

These days, the time-honored "railfan window" on the subways has disappeared down the echoing corridors of time.

Back in the day, however, virtually all subway rolling stock had railfan windows; ironically, the first subway cars to operate in New York were the BMT's 1936 Multi-Section units.

The reason that these articulated units had full-width cabs (the norm nowadays) was that the BMT was then toying with the idea of OPTO.

Some of the units even had a fixture near the motorman's side window, which would have held a bracket for a mirror, enabling the motorman to see down the length of his train.

As "non standard" units, the "Tee-Yay" was anxious to get rid of them, despite the fact that much older equipment was then still in service.

These unique trains were retired in 1961.....

In many ways, the BMT (BRT) was a pioneer; it operated the first subway cars in New York equipped with roller curtain signs (side only), built-in marker lights, and an interior "station" for conductors.

Too, the BMT introduced illuminated end sign boxes to the system in 1925, when the first "D"-type Triplex units entered service, also, illuminated side signs.

The experimental lightweight "Green Hornet" unit of the mid-1930's marked the first use of door chimes........

This year (2022) marks the 58th year since the last IRT Lo-V's (truly iconic cars) made their final runs in "main line" IRT service.

They served on the now-defunct Bowling Green-South Ferry shuttle until the summer of 1964, when they were replaced by R-12's, which served the shuttle until it closed in the late 1970's.

A handful of the venerable "Lo-V's" continued to serve on the Bronx 3rd Avenue El for several more years, until 1969, where they were replaced by several sets of R-12's.........

It is also interesting to remember that, for many years, the IRT operated "gap" trains on the 7th Avenue line; downtown trains terminating at Times Square would discharge their passengers and then be routed into the stub pocket track, just south of the station.

There, the motormen would change ends, and the train would then proceed to re-enter the Times Square station, now ready to take on a fresh load of passengers heading uptown.

This operation, now long gone, helped to provide additional service for passengers who worked in the Times Square area who would be heading back uptown in the PM rush.....

It is a bit fitting, in a way, that the very last prewar IND cars ended their service days on the BMT, in 1977; prior to the opening of the new IND 8th Avenue line in 1932, the new "city cars" (as they were then called) underwent testing on BMT rails......
