In the 1951 sci-fi classic, "WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE", there is a scene (early in the film) inside a taxi somewhere on 5th Avenue (this was clearly stock footage)

You can see "Queen Marys" and single-deck YELLOWS passing by, but no Old Looks or MACKS.

There is also a b/w "still", showing a deserted Times Square, with an Old Look (facing north) on the right-hand side of the screen, moments before the invading rogue planet, Zyra, skirts Earth, causing huge earthquakes and massive tidal waves which inundate New York.

Here again, this is clearly another "stock" image; TARS tracks can be seen on the left (west) side of the scene.

The one "live" bus seen in the film is a particularly handsome Flxible CLIPPER, carrying a group of technicians to the rocket base; this bus was, clearly, a studio (Paramount) bus; there was no lettering on the bus of any kind, nor were there any numbers.

The destination sign was also blank.......

Here's the "no frills" (obviously a studio vehicle) Flxible as mentioned in the previous post ("WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE", 1951)

Here's a "Civil Defense" seen from the 1953 sci-fi classic, "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS", with a SURFACE bus (MACK) in attendance.

Note, also, the large ad in the background for "DETECTIVE STORY", which was released domestically in November, 1951 (this scene was re-used in the 1958 sci-fi flick, "THE LOST MISSILE"......

In those days, when that shot was filmed, with stores along the Hotel McAlpin between 33d and 34th, Broadway and Sixth (a.k.a. "Avenue of the Americas") were actually partitioned like this, so that one bus from one avenue, when going through it, had to turn on a street to get back to where they should be. The beginning of the end was March 1957 when Broadway was made one-way southbound between Columbus Circle and 34th Street, and Sixth Avenue one-way northbound between 34th and 59th Streets; the end came after Nov. 10, 1963 when the rest of Sixth going down from Franklin Street became one-way NB, and huge chunks of Broadway becoming one-way SB (that process of that thoroughfare going one-way wasn't finished until Jan. 14, 1966).

W.B.:

Great info; really interesting....I had no knowledge of this situation.

See:

https://cinematicrandomness.com/blu-ray-review-when-worlds-collide-1951/

One of the photos on this page shows the taxi interior scene I'd mentioned earlier; if you look VERY closely in the right background and you can just about glimpse what appears to be an Old Look at an intersection, facing 5th Avenue.

Also, note the photo showing tidal waves inundating Herald Square; the electric "CRAWFORDS" sign (clearly seen in the one still from "THE BEAST FROM 20,000, FATHOMS") can be seen, partially submerged (note, also, the "HOTEL McALPIN" sign)

The scene showing only the tallest Manhattan skyscrapers rising up out from the flood waters (note partially sunken ships) is still haunting and sobering today, 71 years later......

No shortage of Old Looks in this interesting panoramic Herald Square photo, circa-mid 1950's (also, note several Old Looks parked on the right).......

MaBSTOA 15:

Thanks for this info: I was almost sure that this was an "AVENUE B" bus, but was not 100% certain....

This scene is from Chicago Motor Coach… the Queen Mary has a three digit fleet number whereas Fifth Avenue Coach had four digit numbers.

Not to mention route 53 was a CMC route!

The BoT had a fleet, albeit only 34 buses, of White model 798. They were ordered by Isle Transportation but delivered to the Board of Transportation in 1947. They were exclusively used in Staten Island.

As well as the White models 684, 687, ex North Shore going to the BoT in 1947.

Surface Transportation acquired a White model 788, a diesel-electric. They also had small Whites, model 684 in Westchester service.

Triboro Coach also had White 684 and 788.

The only post-war ACF-Brills in New York City were the model C-44 operated by Queens-Nassau Transit and the single C-48 demo operated by the BoT. Eventually sold to the CTA and converted to propane.
