*Though the vast imcdb.org site has a page of "Dangerfield" photos, only TWO (see previous page for the other photo I linked) hailed from "Noo Yawk" (talk about NO respect!) Sad

Not only that, the very first "made-for-MaBSTOA" Fishbowl - #3301 - is strewn amongst them. (So was #3472, though we don't know if the 'Batwing' put on it ex post facto was still on; plus one of the 1965 'batwings' in the 6701-6900 range and an A/C batwing.)

This, B.T.W., was a few months before the M11 9th and Amsterdam Avenues line, stationed at 132nd Street depot since June 1965, was transferred to the then-brand new Hudson depot at/on Pier 57.

And finally, some graffiti on #3301 but definitely a lot around the A/C batwing. Sheesh!

Not until 1975 with the second order of 'Dangerfields' of the 1973-77 period did 132nd get any of those buses. By then they gained the M20 116th Street Crosstown and the M34/M35/Bx21 routes that traversed the Triborough Bridge (ex-TB).

W.B.:

You mentioned the ugly scourge of graffiti; I was pretty much turned off, some years ago, "O"-scale subway cars were om the market, covered in 70's-era graffiti.

Even IF someone is modeling that era, it still sends a subtle message about that era, a message that such "urban artwork" was OK, and only "an expression of the times". Sad

Then, too, recall, some years ago, there was a lot of controversy over one of the rail museum "restoring" a subway car (an R-16?) to its graffiti-covered state of the 70's/early 80's)

WHY anyone would want to see a vintage subway car "restored" to its appearance during the subways darkest days, is TOTALLY beyond me.

I would have had the car restored to its original paint and appearance........

Earlier in this discussion, we had been discussing the Cold War era (and, tying it into buses)

Note this interesting (if haunting) scene from the chilling, post-nuclear holocaust 1959 film, "THE WORLD, THE FLESH, AND THE DEVIL", starring the legendary Harry Belefonte, always a great favorite of mine.

This deserted street scene is supposed to be in Manhattan; however, note the two wrecked Old Looks, blocking the street.

Indeed, the livery carried by these buses is most certainly NOT the liveries of either the "Tee-Yay" or FACCo; unless I am mistaken, these are Los Angeles buses (a comment on this page is from our late friend, the always congenial and knowledgeable Mr. "L")......

Here's MaBSTOA Fishbowl #5519, seen in 1967's Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau comedy "THE ODD COUPLE", holding down a "5" run.......

Based on GM's serial numbers, it's rather weird that these 'Tee-Yay' A/C Batwings were produced after those for MaBSTOA. From what I gathered, 126th Street ('MAN') where the (M)15 was based out of, got 80 out of 202 buses (8123-8202) that were produced in this order; 8136 was amongst that set. They seemed to have replaced at least part of the 1963 set one of which appeared in A Thousand Clowns - that part of which was moved to the outer boroughs (3601-3669 to Fresh Pond and 3670-3749 to Flushing; until the A/C's came, 3601-3749 were holding court at 'CXXVI').

And, from the same film, we have here Old Look #2629, one of those distinctive "buses with the sign that sticks out in the front"...... Wink

There's the thing. These films provide a window as to which rolling stock was holding down what line, and from what depot(s).

W.B.:

I often wonder if, back in the twilight years of the Old Looks and MACKS if the personell at a given garage thought that they were getting "hand-me-downs", if they found their facilities getting older buses, as newer equipment came "on line" via other garages, if the older buses didn't go directly to the scrapyard, without further assignments elsewhere.

I know that, with the arrival of TDH-5303's (MaBSTOA) in 1963, plus, and MaBSTOA also receiving an additional 279 TDH-4510's (from Brooklyn), allowed the retirement of the remaining MACK C-45's and C-47's, plus, close to 400 TD-4506's and 4507's......

Saw this photo in the past and was trying to figure the same, any sight of batwings are not in view. Here is a later photo of 3472 in two tone blue without any batwings, following 6704. At least we know at this time in 1973 the demo batwings we not kept.

VERY nostalgic photo; one of my all-time faves! Wink

Check out that original "INDEPENDENT" subway sign; even into the 1980's, such signs could often still be seen displayed at some station entrances.

I always loved "batwing" buses; here in NJ, TNJ's Fishbowls were also equipped with them; they always looked super-cool illuminated at night (I miss them still!)

Am curious.....

How many "Tee-Yay" Fishbowls featured batwings; likewise, how many MaBSTOA buses were equipped with them?
