It should also be noted that, in 1958's "THE LOST MISSILE", some of the Civil Defense footage used in the film were also used in 1953's "THE BEAST FROM 20,000,000 FATHOMS".

In fact, the air-raid sirens heard blaring were the same heard in 1956's Toho Productions' "RODAN".

(I guess "recycling" is nothing new!) Wink

SURFACE Mack (via re-used Civil Defense footage) from "THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS"*, also used again later in "THE LOST MISSILE"......

In speaking of "Noo Yawk" buses during the Cold War era, we must recall the "Bingham" MACKS (#'s 5200-5299) of 1950/1951.

These otherwise "conventional"-looking buses were unique that, in case of an attack, they could be converted into ambulances.

Interestingly, buses #'s 5200-5219 went down to Miami as soon at they were built (wearing BoT colors) to replace some of the buses that had been destroyed by fire in Miami.

The BoT then ordered additional buses to replace them.

The "Bingham" MACKS also featured such innovations as sliding rear/standee windows, fluorescent lighting, and treadle-operated rear doors.......

It wasn't until the two 'Tee-Yay' garages in upper Manhattan at the time, got the 7000 series TDH-5106 "Old Looks" in 1957, that updated signs were used for the first time indicating 'M-15 First & Second Avenues' - and before that, 'M-13 Journal Building'. The 'Bingham Macks' and other earlier buses they and, before them, the 'Bee O'Tee', ran, all had the outdated 'M-13 First Avenue' and 'M-15 Second Avenue' as late as then, even though paper transfers as early as at least 1954 indicated 'M-15 First and Second Avenues Route'.

W.B:

What year were the "Binghams" retired?

What lines were they running on?

Seeing that the "Binghams" were able to be able to be converted into ambulances (in case of an attack on New York), I wonder if GM ever toyed with, at least, a similar Cold War-era "convertible" bus.

Recall, the FLXIBLE "Airporter" type that was used by the FDNY (we've mentioned this bus quite awhile back), back in the 1950's, and was equipped with 28 cots (which could be used as a first-aid station) and, also, had its own generator, sterilizer, hot water tank, oxygen supply, and heating pads.

This "bus" could also be connected to an outside power source.......

I'd hazard a guess that as the years went on they were shuffled from borough to borough, and retired within the time period the first 'Dangerfields' entered service for the 'Tee-Yay'. That they saw service on the Manhattan bus routes they and predecessor 'Bee O'Tee' operated has been cinched by those photos, for sure.

EDIT: Probably even before, by a year or so. Remember, those Binghams were in the 5200's - and they would have been put to pasture before MaBSTOA's 1964 lot of Fishbowls (5201-5525) first arrived.

To think the Peter Witt numbers shown would later be reused for within the A/C batwing Fishbowls as run for years by MaBSTOA starting in '67 . . .

W.B.:

As always, appreciate the information.

Though, of course, growing up in the 60's, I well remember MACKS in Manhattan, I always most associate them with Staten Island; for a good part of the 1960's, I remember seeing only Old Looks and MACKS at the St. George terminal.

In fact, I have a circa-1963 postcard showing the St. George terminal, and a large number of "Tee-Yay" Old Looks and MACKS, but no Fishbowls (in this nostalgic, long-ago view, long lines of vehicles are seen waiting for the 69th St. boats)

When I was growing up, various models of MACKS were a part of virtually all the old "indy" companies I knew in my much, much younger years; the last, if my memory serves me correctly, vanished about 1967/1968.

I always wished that the "Tee-Yay" had purchased "New Look" MACKS; the only such buses I ever saw "in person" were those operated by "BLUE & WHITE", in the mid-70's (I believe these were ex-Yonkers buses)

By the way, these buses were the very last MACKS of any sort to operate in my general area.......

MACK trivia note:

The "New Look" front end, used on most of the last MACKS delivered, weas devised by Niagara Frontier Transit System.

Denver was another city that once operated at least some of the "New Look" MACKS.

Then, too, was the "ADS-1", first displayed inSt. Louis, in 1956.

This was MACK's last new transit bus design, and was known in the industry as "The Dream Bus" and "The Bus Of Tomorrow".

This modernistic, streamlined bus was one of a kind; this unique bus ran for a short while in Schenectady, before being destroyed in a garage fire........

......was watching 1958's sc-fi flick "THE LOST MISSILE" again on Youtube (I just found out is is available on DVD; I'm indeed purchasing a copy!)

I spied a few more "stock" Civil Defense scenes that I previously missed (New York); quite a number of buses (mostly Old Looks) pulled over to the sides of the streets.

In one quick scene, I glimpsed a "Queen Mary" with several parked, single-deck buses ahead of it (as the "Queen Mary's" were gone by 1953, this was a particularly old piece of footage)

Too, in one of the Civil Defense film clips, showing the mezzanine level in one of the larger subway stations, an overhead sign can be made out:

TRAINS TO QUEENS
SOUTH FERRY & BROOKLYN

When the last train from Manhattan is pulling out of the station (stock footage), I am almost positive the train was IRT.......

Poor quality "screen snap" ("THE LOST MISSILE", 1958), but this one shows the driver's area of a "Noo Yawk" bus pulling into a curb; note the once-familiar Johnson farebox........

Here's a card card that would have been contemplated inside buses, streetcars, and rapid transit trains, back in the "Cold War" era of the 1950's and 1960's.........
