129th St. & Amsterdam Avenue; here we see a now-redundant TARS streetcar being hauled out of the "barn" by a hefty beast of a MACK, on its silent way to the torch.

Am curious as to if SURFACE buses used this former TARS facility, after the last streetcars were hauled away, or, any other former TARS facilities (obviously, the power had been already been turned off, seeing as how trucks were being used to remove the old streetcars from the barn/car house/depot).......

W.B.:

I had the feeling that old TARS "car barn" later became a SURFACE garage, but was not sure.

I know that TARS had a large yard "up north" where many cars were stored, and, sadly, where many were scrapped (Garden Avenue)

Did SURFACE use this facility, after the streetcars vanished into history?

TARS Garden Avenue yard, 1944.

Note prewar TWIN in the background ("SURFACE"), also, the classic "arrow through a circle" bus stop signs........

TARS had a car barn on Tenth Avenue and 54th Street which became inoperative and inactive after the first wave of Manhattan bustitutions in late 1946 - and which was over a block away from the then-New York City Omnibus depot at Ninth and 54th. I presume that TARS car barn was on the block where the windowless AT&T building (originally Bell System) whose north and south faces have openings on the very top that resemble a robotic face (a la Marvel Comics' Iron Man), now stands:

https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/usa/new-york-internet/pictures/811-10th-avenue-4243.jpg

There was another TARS car barn that went by the wayside around that same time - on Third Avenue and East 65th Street. That's probably the area that pic of the streetcar being put on for possible scrapping was taken.

W.B.:

Appreciate, as always, the information.

Clicked on the link you provided and I all I got was "access denied" Sad

I well know the building you spoke of, though; there was a lot of media hype at the time, telling of how the building was safe from nuclear fallout, in case of a nuclear attack (aftereffects of the "cold war" lasted for quite a long time)

PSNJ, overwhelmingly, simply re-used old car barns/car houses/depots for the replacement buses; MARKET ST. (Paterson), in fact, is being rehabbed and renovated by NJT; this historic facility is a "kissin' cousin" to the one in Union City, which NJT closed in the early 1990's.

Others, like ROSEVILLE in Newark, were torn down after being closed by NJT in the early 1990's, when the a new facility opened out in the Meadows.

Getting back to TARS, I wonder how many folks ever noticed the the paint used on the new SURFACE buses was "inspired", if you will, by the old streetcars. Wink

That TARS hung on as long as it did "up north", into the early 50's, is surprising, especially since the Manhattan and Bronx lines had already been gone for some years.....

Historical note:

On this day in 1947, the Amsterdam Avenue (TARS) line is replaced by SURFACE buses; the streetcars had been based out of the 65th St. and Harlem car barns.

The site of the old 65th St. car barn became a luxury apartment building, "Manhattan House"......

Hopefully this'll go thru: a 1960's photo (before two 'eyes' were cut open on the very top of the west face):

https://vintagemanhattanskyline.tumblr.com/post/128317581498/new-york-telephone-switching-building-811-tenth

Again, wasn't it on that block that the old TARS car barn (which handled what would later be bustituted as the M-103 and M-106) was once situated?

W.B.:

That link worked.....thanks! Wink

This unique building made me think of something Mom told me, way back when this building was new; she said: "It looks like a big robot", and, alternately, at other times, "It looks like a LEGO building!" Rolling Eyes

I also remember Mom, long ago, telling me of one time (she was about 13, which would have been in 1930), when, after taking a PSNJ trolley from Union City down to the West Shore terminal in Weehawken, they took the the ferry to W. 42nd St.

There, Mom told me they boarded "a trolley that had open sides with screens" and rode as far as 3rd Avenue, where they boarded the El, heading uptown for the Bronx Zoo.

In retrospect, it's sad that SURFACE never had a history that lasted for as many decades as TARS......

Funny thing was, I did a scale model of that building with LEGO blocks, as a kid . . . but yeah, I see I'm not the only one that saw something robotic about it.

I see some railroad had a building on that block way back when. Wonder if it came under TARS' orbit subsequent to that map . . .

https://newyorkbefore.com/includes/newPoint.php?idt=53&latt=40.767127&lngt=-73.990871

Apprarently based on this history . . . the route based out of that building (the West Belt line) would later end up, by 1913, in TARS' hands, hence that block now housing the AT&T Switching Center did, once, house one of TARS' car barns, look below:
