W.B.:
If I am not mistaken, the R-38's (aka the "Brightliner Wannabes") were the last to have illuminated side signs.......

I think we'd all agree that the earlier photos were when those cars looked their best . . . |

Agreed.
IMHO, it was truly barbaric how the end bulkheads of those handsome cars were so desecrated; too, pity the poor straphanger whose vision wasn't that good, having to wait until the train was practically on top of him, before he could tll what line the train was running on.
Progress.....

Notice that #153357 (which included #4333, one of the last of the 'greenies' in terms of bus color schemes) was taken just one day after #154621 (where a Flxie a.k.a. 'Dangerfield' was next to the very first numbered bus - #6000 - to bear the two-tone blue scheme that would later spread to most pre-'71 buses).
Notice, #6000 was just broken into service and already there's some graffiti on the side . . . none of the buses pictured just a day later seemed to have them. |

W.B.:
Though, of course, the buses did not get with the scourge of graffiti as hard as the subways did, the ugly scrawls were still a harbinger of the dark days to come in "Noo Yawk".
Even on the subways, in the early 70's, the graffiti seemed to be mere (but unsightly) scrawlings; a few years later, however, it was like every subway car in the city was thoroughly covered in the explosive, garish "artwork".......

That reminds me: In that pic #153357 where the 'Arnine' castoffs were playing out their days on the Eastern Division, not a single scrawl in sight, it seems. |

W.B.:
Initially (at least) it seemed as though the last of the prewar IND cars, which ended their days on the BMT in 1977, never got slammed with as much graffiti as the SMEE cars did.
On a book on subway graffiti I have, one of the authors stated that graffiti "artists" preferred the older "slab"-side cars, to the newer cars, which they called "ridgies", as their colorful (ugly as hell) scrawlings didn't adhere to these cars as well as it did on the older car's sides.
The IRT got the worst of the graffiti, though the BMT and IND also were hit bad.
My favorite IND cars then were the R-10's on the "CC"; I recall one car having almost the entire interior plastered in the scrawlings, while, lurking underneath, was the original 1948/1949 paint.
Many IRT cars were dark as dungeons, as most light fixtures (and windows) were painted over as well.
I still miss the old cars, but NOT the wanton vandalism of that era.....

...too, recall that the subway cars were COVERED with graffiti, INSIDE and OUT; wheres, the buses might have had some senseless scrawlings on seat backs, etc.
Recall, also, that, by a MAJOR miracle, the SIRT's R-44's was spared the mass explosion of graffiti that defaced the entire subway system........

.......had the 70's/early 1980's graffiti epidemic hit the buses as hard as it had hit the subways, all I can say is that it would have been a living hell trying to keep the windshields from being painted over.
The LIRR, thankfully, pretty much escaped the graffiti epidemic as well......

..........then, too, the MTA has had to deal with "scratchitti", more recently.......
Seems a lot of this "new age" vandalism seems to focus more on the subway than the buses; the defacement of transit vehicles by misguided young "artists" never ceases to get mmy blood pressure up......

Same here. Even more disgusting is that all that is encouraged by certain politicians and certain persons in the media. |
