Here's a DROGIN first-generation Fishbowl (#131) at East Rutherford, working a "local" route, back in 1974.......

An ARROW TRAILWAYS Fishbowl just out of the Lincoln Tunnel (31st St. Union City), back in 1981.
Note that the bus is signed for the "#32 NUTLEY", a long-time DE CAMP route.......

Same location, same year.
Here's a R&T Fishbowl, sporting a new paint scheme, trailed by a fleetmate, still wearing the old R&T paint.
Note that the lead bus is signed for the "#5"; this line had always been a long-established NHBL route (this route ran by our old Union City apartment house, back in the 60's)
I recall that, back in the day, seeing R&T buses at a garage in the company of "Boulevard" buses (NHBL/SHBL) was comnonplace......

I believe Academy ran the SIM23 and 24 between Staten Island's South Shore to Manhattan. They took over these routes after Atlantic Express went defunct on them around 2013 or 14.
I believe the MTA is or has since taken them over themselves. |

Arrow Motor Bus Co. started out as a charter operator, and often supplemented Continental Trailways on busy holiday periods on the New York/Pittsburgh route.
Not sure about the history of it running that commuter route. I did know the owner, Ronny Moore, and he later moved his company to Burlington, Ia, and resurrected the Burlington Trailways name on a new company that took over some former Continental Trailways routes between Chicago and Denver. They operate an extensive charter and escorted tour business, as well... |

traildriver:
Appreciate, as always, the additional info!
However, I'm still puzzled as to why an "ARROW" bus was running on a DE CAMP route (#32); could it have been that "ARROW" had purchased this bus second-hand from DE CAMP?
Then again, I cannot recalling DE CAMP selling that line (#32) to another operator
I do, however, recalling seeing "ARROW" buses a number of times years back (in the PABT/Lincoln Tunnel area, but did not pay attention to the roller signs.......

Earlier, I'd mentioned that the "#5" had always been a NHBL route, one that I knew very well growing up in Union City, back in the 1960's (I had posted the link to a photo earlier, showing a R&T Fishbowl signed for the "#5")
This 1972 photos shows NHBL's Fishbowl #B114, just north of Journal Square, its outbound run from the PABT nearly done.
For most of the 60's, however, I recall Old Looks being used on this line, and, until the mid-60's, WHITES as well.
Heading into the PABT, this line only picked up NY-bound passengers; outbound, it only carried passengers from New York, and did not pick up any "local" riders.....

At the Lincoln Tunnel helix, back in 1981, we see R&T #69 heading for the PABT, trailed by a "COACHWAYS" Buffalo.
Note that the roller curtain on the R&T bus has a blank area where the route number would be displayed......

This 1981 photo (which we've seen before) shows the rear of an MTA a/c "Dangerfield) in Brooklyn
The mid-1970's NDOT "Dangerfield" Flexies I remember had much smaller rear windows; in fact, you could see where the large window area had been "filled in".
I had always thought that this had something to do with adding additional structural strength to support the a/c unit.
However, as can be seen here, this Flexie is a/c equipped, but has the older-style large window(s).......

W.B.:
See what happens when you are a card-carrying insomniac??
Anyway, still wondering why the later Flexies had smaller rear windows than the earlier, 1960's models.....

That's one for the ages. I presume because they built it to orient towards the exhaust being on the top left of the rear side. I saw at least one if not two Flxies where they had two pieces in that small rear window rather than just one. But those were extremely rare.
I was never much a fan of that type of rear window. Made me wonder even more why at least a small portion of the '64 and '65 Flxies were never assigned, even if only briefly, to the Manhattan Bus Division depot on 126th Street. Would have fit in more with the 1964 and '65 MaBSTOA Fishbowls on the Manhattan streets. For me, it was manna whenever any one of the seven 1969-70 Flxies that, in 1974, went to Hudson depot passed by. |
