W.B.:
GREAT photo!
Agreed; though the DELTA ad WAS, indeed, BIG, it was far more "pedestrian" than the earlier TWA signs.
Even the BRANIFF ad was more "spectacular", in the classic sense.
Prior to the merger with UNITED in the early 1960's, CAPITAL had its own "spectacular" in downtown Atlanta; this sign featured both the new CAPITAL logo and the CONVAIR 880, which the the airline never placed in service.
Across the street from this sign, was a large "COCA COLA" electric sign, with a time clock beneath.
Sidenote: Atlanta was still operating trolley buses, at that time.....

There's a number of colorful and nostalgic outdoor ads on this page; at the bottom, you will find a beautiful circa-1960 ad for "SAS", highlighting the then-new DC-8 (the first entered service with DELTA and UNITED in 1959)......

I LOVE this one!!!!!!!!!
As soon as I came across this vintage illuminated "WELCOME ABOARD" (TWA) sign, I could not help but be reminded of a side sign box on a SMEE subway car....(!!)

Could be . . . looks like Trans-Lite may have had something to do with that. One of their fonts was used for the 'WELCOME ABOARD'. They also alternated with Transign in making mylar roll signs for the private Queens bus companies - and for some Brooklyn 'Tee-Yay' depots (saw their type on a few B41 runs). |

Rare is the picture of that area of Atlanta where, in the catty-cornered building across from that with the Coke ad (and the same bulding where that Capital ad was), they had a news zipper where you could actually see a clear headline as opposed to a blur of all bulbs lit, with the top, middle and bottom lightest of all. From what I read Naxon Telesign's perforator/transmitter system controlled that as well. Had something to do with WSB radio and TV, I think.

As well, the time controls for the Coke ad were supplied by Time-O-Matic. I know that type well. This was one variant, with the '7' looking almost like an upside-down 'L' except for the top left. The second and third rows from the top on some of those had curvature that allowed the showing of an actual '7'. |

W.B,:
Regarding the "spectaculars" in downtown Atlanta......
The ONLY picture (to date) I've seen of the signs in that area (including trolley bus wires) is in the book "CAPITAL AIRLINES" by George W. Cearley. J
As you said, it would seem that photo of this area (at least, circa-1960) are indeed quite rare...........

Appreciate this info; that TWA sign indeed had a "transit" look to it, that Your's Truly noted right away.
The photo I posted the link to was interesting, to say the least; previously, any vintage airline "WELCOME ABOARD" signs I've seen were "board" type (non-illuminated)
Also commonplace (back in the days when passengers walked out onto the tarmac to board their flights) were the small "frame" signs, that utilized interchangeable flight numbers and other information.....

Like I said, in comparison that 1970's Delta ad in that space was indeed, as you put it, "pedestrian." |
