Fellows:

From what he discussed here so far, it would seem that at least SOME of the 9000-series Old Looks were equipped with two-way radios, which required the distinctive rooftop bubble (so far, we know of two 9000's so equipped)

Interesting in that, obviously, only some of the 9000-series Old Looks were radio equipped......

This 1970 photo shows two 7000-series Old Looks; neither has a rooftop bubble for radio.

Here again, for whatever reason, it appears that the only "Tee-Yay" Old Looks to be radio equipped were the 9000's.......

Let's see what 'Tee-Yay' buses running in and around Manhattan have them "roof bubble" thingies, shall we?

Interesting (to say the least!).......

These two photos of Old Look #9000 were snapped one year apart (1971/1972); note that, in the later photo (1972), the bus is no longer equipped with a rooftop communications "bubble".

It would be interesting to find out just why it was removed......

I could only surmise the removal was in anticipation of 9000's ultimate retirement.

From 1960 through 2000 I rode New York City buses often, in all five boroughs. I never saw a bus operator use his radio! Once (if memory is correct) I heard a supervisor order a re-route because of a fire.

W.B.:

I was thinking along the same line as you; the thing that puzzles me more, though, is WHY a radio was installed in an older bus that was not to be in service much longer?

After all, it cost bucks to install the necessary communications equipment in the first place; and then, it cost "manpower" to remove the equipment sheltered by the "bubble" on the roof.

If ANY (NYCTA/MTA) Old Look was to remain in service until, at least, further into the 1970's, it would have then made sense to equip these older buses with radios......

Joe:

Here, in NJ, I was not all aware of drivers using a radio at any time (even though I rode buses daily for many, many years), until the 1990's; that's when I first became aware of the drivers (ACADEMY) using radios......

A few quick question here for "those in the know":

When were the first radios installed on NYCTA/MTA buses?

Was there a "pilot" program, initially, regarding the instillation of radio equipment?

What buses were selected initially to have communications equipment installed? ("Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA)

When did the "Em-Tee-Yay" replace the first-generation radios on the buses?

What types of communication to present-day operators use?

Back in the pre-radio days, I would guess the driver simply had to find the nearest pay phone to call his garage for assistance.

Appreciate any info; thanks in advance.....

Oldest "roof bubble" photos (non-Old Look) I could find ("Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA) date back to 1970 and 1971........

Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing those "roof bubbles" on much if not all of the 1960 FACL and ST Fishbowls.

W.B.:

In Greller's "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES", there are several photos of "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA buses with the radio "bubble" on the roof:

#8103 ("Tee-Yay")

#8815 ("Tee-Yay"/"Em-Tee-Ay")

#88 * ("Tee-Yay") *Bus still equipped with original articulated windshield wipers, according to photo caption.

#8814 ("Tee-Yay"/Em-Tee-Ay")

#4302 ("Em-Tee-Ay"

#6642 (MaBSTOA)

#5429 (MaBSTOA)

#7431 (MaBSTOA)

In the caption of two of the photos is the following: "........the pod on the roof housed radio equipment....."

.......going by the nycsubway.org bus photo archives (early 70's), it appears that while some MaBSTOA buses had radio "bubbles" on the roof, other did not.

These buses are so equipped......
