5th Avenue & 60th St., 1972.
Note, here, that it appears that (repainted) #5233's "G" emblem has been painted over......

This was after 8459-8477 were converted to express bus service, with different seating added and shifted to 100th Street depot. (Prior to this, they had buses from different depots across the city handling M23X - a Bronx-based 1969-70 Flx here, a 1970-71 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowl there.) That was 19 buses right there - which was why only six buses (4500-4505) of T6H-5310A's were ordered for and allotted to MaBSTOA in 1972-73.
Also, notice second-order first-gen TA #738 behind it on the #15 . . . |

It also struck me that when the initial repainting to two-tone blue first came forth, some depots had the bus numbers in gold leaf while others had them in silver print. What was with that? |

W.B.:
Once again, there many such "why did they do this?", back in the halcyon days of the "Tee-Yay" and the early "Em-Tee-Ay".
Personally, I much preferred the gold-leaf numbers.....

Tremont & Boston Rd, 1971 *

*On the left, note the tattered (left over from previous seasons) posters for Palisades Amusement Park (Fort Lee, NJ), which, ironically, closed forever just several months after this photo was snapped. |

A week ago, I enjoyed the thread of buses or trolleys in front of Brooklyn movie houses. As per the West Farms post, maybe we could find Bickford's.
----
For the young folk, we could think of a NY outer boroughs chain and take buses as they pass them. Please, not car dealers. Maybe Dunkins or McDonalds. |

That '11' sign on batwinged A/C Fishbowl 8367 looks like the same vintage of production as the one across from Columbia-Presbyterian for the #5 bus in another pic from a year later.
But as for the Chock Full o' Nuts - back when the slogan was "The Better Coffee a Millionaire's Money Can Buy" - as opposed to today's nondescript "Get New York Roasted."

And with a recycled sign from the first 1963 MaBSTOA Fishbowls, inserted into this one; West Farms was #29's home at the time, while Amsterdam and 132nd Street, as noted before, also got the first made-for-OA Fishbowls in '63. (Their assignation to 132nd allowed the better of FACCo's Old Looks to be transferred to 'da Bronx'.) |

Joe:
Glad you enjoyed the photos!
I've seen a number of photos over the years of streetcars (and buses) where you see a BICKFORD's cafeteria in the background (there was even one in Journal Square, many year ago!)
The famed EBINGER's bakery chain's store's I have seen in a number of old streetcar-era photos; what was yesterday's commonplace becomes today's history.....

Raise your hands if you remember Elpine's. Was that establishment the one that became Orange Julius, or . . . |

In my house, when Your's Truly was growing up, Mom only purchased two coffee, "Chock Full O' Nuts (I LOVED their pound cake!) and "Eight O' Clock" from our local A&P (I still remember that intoxicating aroma of fresh-ground beans pouring out of those big red machines at each check-out!

Here's an undated photo of blue ##4313 (3rd Avenue & 34th); note, on the "Baldie-Dash", there is no "GM" emblem, and only one lone bracket for an ad frame.....

A 'Tee-Yay' bus doing MaBSTOA duty; makes one wonder why none of the 1964 or '65 Flxies did service on the five Manhattan TA routes in their twilight years. I've seen pics of a 1963 TA Fishbowl doing M103 59th Street Crosstown service; Flx 4000's from 1969-70 on the M104 . . .
That pic does look like post-1981, though. I thought I saw the replacement green and white street signs with the Statue of Liberty at far left. |
