Another question I'm pondering at the moment......
With such a glut of used highway buses on the market at present, when (hopefully) the pandemic finally begins to make a long-overdue exit, will there be buyers (i.e. operators) to purchase these buses?
Given the dire straits that GREYHOUND has been in for some time now, my guess would be that its current fleet would remain basically "status quo" until either all bus operations end, or, if another company assumes operation of the remaining routes, at some future date.....

.....the scary thing to contemplate is what will happen to the newest and most up-to-date buses, if, eventually, no buyer can be found.
IMHO, I doubt that these vehicles could even hope to be purchased by foreign buyers, given the current dismal state of things across the globe......

Speaking of obscure, long-defunct carriers.....
I have a very rare timetable for "KING BROS. BUS LINES, INC."*, from January, 1943.
This was a Midwest carrier that had terminals/stations at the following (Ohio) locations:
ABERDEEN
BOUDES FERRY
BUENA VISTA
CENTERVILLE
CINCINNATI
DAYTON
FELICITY
FRANKLIN
hIGGINSPORT
LEBANON
MANCHESTER
MASON
MOSCOW
NEVILLE
NEW RICHMOND
POINT PLEASANT
PORTSMOUTH
READING
RIDGEVILLE
RIPLEY
SHARONVILLE
XENIA
*HQ for this company was:
702 SCHMIDT BUILDING
CINCINNATI, OHIO
TELEPHONE: CHerry 4580

(It would also be interesting to find out what makes/models of buses this company once used; also, when did the company go out of business, or, possibly, when was it absorbed by another company) |

Also from the aforementioned "KING BROS. BUS LINES" timetable:
".........the Office of Defense Transportation has ruled that buses may not exceed a speed of 35 miles per hour........"
".......we beg your indulgence if we are late, but, please remember that we are at war, and are doing everything possible to cooperate with the government to save equipment and materials that are impossible to replace....."
"......in order to save time, gasoline, tires, and conserve the equipment in general, we are now establishing regular bus stops in each city and town where we operate. After these stops are established, they will be the only point in these cities and towns where stops will be made for passengers to board and leave the buses......."

Another rare item I dug out of my archives is a typewritten sheet (with holes for mounting in a binder) from 1949, for "DIXIE GREYHOUND".
This was a "TIME SCHEDULE", issued by Edwin J. Bomer, Vice-President of Traffic, dated 10/10/49.
Address given for "DIXIE GREYHOUND":

Arrival and departure times were CST.
Times were given for running between Memphis and Mammoth Spring (Ark)
Stops included:

GILMORE
TYRONZA
MARKED TREE
HARRISBURG CORNER

In regard to King Brothers, it was started around 1921 by three brothers named King (naturally). Their original headquarters was in Lebanon, OH about midway between Cincinnati and Dayton. Eventually, their routes ran from Cincinnati north to Dayton and from Cincinnati east to Portsmouth along the Ohio River. There was also a short route from Lebanon northeast to Xenia, about 15 miles east of Dayton.
Cincinnati Street Railway, which also owned The Ohio Bus Line Company, acquired King Brothers around 1942. On February 1, 1948, King swapped its Cincinnati-Dayton, Cincinnati-Portsmouth and Lebanon-Xenia routes to Greyhound in exchange for Greyhound's Dayton-Middletown-Hamilton route. King also retained the right to operate local service between Cincinnati and Sharonville (on the Dayton line) and to New Richmond (on the Portsmouth route). Greyhound had acquired the Dayton-Hamilton route with the purchase of Cincinnati & Lake Erie Transportation Co. in 1947. Despite its name, the C&LE bus operation never made it to Cincinnati, terminating in Hamilton, about twenty miles north.
On the same day as the route transfer, Cincinnati Street Railway merged what remained of King Brothers into Ohio Bus Line and the King Brothers name disappeared.
King had started buying Yellow Coach diesels prior to World War II and that continued under Cincinnati Street Railway ownership. The last orders were for 10 GM TDH-3610's in 1946 and 6 PDA3703's the following year.
Hope this is of some interest.
Roy

Roy:
I greatly appreciate this wonderful historical information; the late bus historian/newsman Jim Lehrer would have agreed with us, in believing that the study of historic bus companies and their routes is indeed a most fascinating subject.
When I browse through my old TT's, it never ceases to amaze me as to just how many bus companies were once in existence, and how few (if any at all) remain today.
Though GREYHOUND and TRAILWAYS were, indeed, the "big league players" in the long-distance highway bus business, back in the day,, it is important to remember the many, many, now obscure "fallen flags" that, today, are only known to the most astute of bus historians......

.......IMHO, one of the best ways to get an inkling of our once-complex intercity bus network is to pick up a vintage GREYHOUND or TRAILWAYS timetable and read the notes on connecting bus companies.
As an example, from a 1950 "SOUTHERN KANSAS GREYHOUND LINES" timetable, the following connection companies are listed:
ABL: AMERICAN BUSLINES
A: ARROW STAGE LINE
DMC: CONTINENTAL DIXIE LINES
TxB: TEXAS BUS LINES
JTC: JEFFERSON TRANSPORTATION
TDN: TRANSPORTES DEL NORTE
NMT: NEW MEXICO TRANSPORTATION COMPANY
Those old, once-disposable timetables are, today, indeed, historical relics, allowing us to contemplate the extensiveness of yesterday's complex intercity operations.....

Taking that a step further, would be to obtain copy(s) of Russell’s Official Bus Guide, which in the 50’s and ‘60’s was as thick as a Manhattan Yellow Pages, with all Greyhound , Trailways, and most independent bus timetables, including maps, company directories, depot info, etc….
Try ebay… |

I had one from 1970, but, many years ago, gave it to a (former) transit-buff friend who has since passed.
You are right; that old guide was like an old-time phone book.....THICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Further proof at just how complex and extensive our intercity bus network once was......
