Adjacent to the 125th St. Ferry terminal in Edgewater, PS also had a carbarn and a yard; here, we see two handsome "De Luxe" 3500's (signed for the "HUDSON RIVER" line) sunning themselves between runs.

Cars on this line carried heavy loads of park-goers from New York, not to mention the crowds boarding from areas west of the Park......

*On summer Sundays (as well as July 4th) PSNJ would operate special cars from the 125th St. Ferry to the Park; there, the cars would change ends and descend down the cliffs, back to the ferry terminal, to load more park-goers.

These cars would carry dash signs that read "PARK ONLY"

Mom, Dad, my sister and I always walked the sidewalk from the Edgewater ferry to Palisades Amusement. Once, when I was twelve or so, a friendly family of five gave me a day at the park with them, and I think they paid the way. I am quite certain that the father also chose for that group of six to walk up and down the hill.
---
Dad disliked buses because they replaced trolleys. Once, exiting from the park, we walked behind an idling bus. The exhaust was high, not under the chassis. As Dad walked by the exhaust the driver hit the accelerator and gave Dad a cloud of engine exhaust.

Joe:

That was QUITE a hike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

At the time PS was still running streetcars on the BERGEN Division (until August, 1938), the Company was still operating two ferry lines:

125th ST. FERRY

BERGEN POINT-PORT RICHMOND FERRY

PS sold the 125th St. line to "ELECTRIC FERRIES" in 1943, which operated the line with a fleet of diesel-electric boats until the line was abandoned in December, 1950.

PS also sold the BERGEN POINT (Bayonne) ferry crossing at that time; until all service ended in 1962 (using small, open-deck boats) this line was operated by SUNRISE FERRIES.

This company also operated the former SIRT ferry from Tottenville to Perth Amboy, until late 1963........

Here's a circa-1938 view inside the main building (aka "The Big House") at the PS barns in Union City (growing up, I lived a 15-minute walk from this big, busy facility)

Note the sign for the "BAYONNE FERRY" in the rear window of the older bus on the left......

In this circa-1948 view, we see a "UNION CITY" line car about to enter the private ROW leading down from Boulevard East (Weehawkn) to the West Shore Ferry terminal (note ad placard on the car's dash for Palisades Amusement Park)

Until September, 1938, "PALISADE" line cars ran between this terminal and the Park; during the off-season, the cars simply terminated at Palisades Junction, two blocks west.......

Circa-1947, we see streetcars and buses awaiting repairs in the "Big House" bay at the PSNJ's huge Union City carbarn/garage.

Note the old front-engine bus on the left, signed for the "#22 HILLSIDE" (also, note the semaphore arm)

In later years, PS sold this line (which I knew well for many years); I can recall several companies operating the #22, including BINETTI, FRANMAR, and ACADEMY.

This line later went to NJT; NJT foolishly cut back this line to Nungessers back in 2005; today, there are no longer any direct buses between the Fort Lee border area and Hoboken...... Sad

Thirty years later, in 1968, the Palisade right-of-way could be seen between buildings in crowded West NewYork. I think it ran north between Hudson Avenue and Palisade Avenue, but I cannot find it now, fifty years later, on Google Street View. The empty spaces have been filled in by more construction. The right-of-way may have included Public Service transmission cables.

In the sixties, one could look at an electric pole to see the name of the municipality printed on a band.

Joe:

In my town, the old "PALISADE"* line ROW is still easy to discern; it is now used as a "minor" thoroughfare, but, mostly used for residential auto parking.

Older residents (Your's Truly included) still refer to "Commercial Avenue" as "the car line" (this was a semi-private ROW)

From Columbia Avenue, due to north to the site of the former PALISADES JUNCTION, it is still easy to image the PS streetcars clanging along the route; in fact, here and there, if you look carefully, you can see cracks in the pavement indicating where rail sections are still buried (the last visible section of rail disappeared around 1990; I did get a few photos of this old rail before it was paved over)

The old PS powerhouse (originally built for streetcar use) is still in use by PSE&G, and looks virtually the same as it did back in the trolley days, except that the old PS insignia has been removed.

On Columbia Avenue (Fort Lee) at the Junction, the former "HUDSON RIVER" line ROW, again, is very easy to discern; trees are now growing where the tracks were, but the towering wooden utility poles look just about the same as those there which were then in place when the streetcars were still running.

All steel line poles have long since vanished; block signals were mounted on several poles.

About 1932, PS built a wye near the powerhouse, to handle single-ended, one-man cars.

There was also a steel trestle that spanned Palisades Avenue (at Gorge Road), used by the "PALISADE" line cars until 1938; it remained until it was torn down for the WW2 scrap metal drive.

A large painted advertisement for the 125th St. Ferry adorned both sides of the trestle; no trace of the trestle or its supports remain today........

"NYO"

*Streetcars of the "PALISADES" line also used a high wooden (two-track) trestle to cross the lake at North Hudson Park (locals always called it "Hudson County Park"); the park is located on the Fairview/North Bergen border.

When the streetcars made their last runs on this line in 1938, the trestle sat idle for several years before being demolished.

To this day, some of the old piling supports for this trestle are still intact below the water line; when the lake was drained a few decades back , so that rehab work could be done, attempts were made to blast the old supports out of the lake bed.

This worked stopped, as, it was found that the old pilings were of such sturdy construction, and had been sunk so deeply into the lake bed, that it would further damage the bed of the lake if the trestle support removal continued.

Mom recalled this line well when she was a girl (1920's/early 1930's); in the winter months, they'd often ride up from Union City (after transferring at some point to the "PALISADE" line), to watch the people ice skating on the frozen lake.

........perhaps the most tangible reminder of the old "PALISADE" car line is the large, PS car house in West New York on Broadway, today used by the West New York DPW; it looks remarkably, much the same as it did back in the days when PS was still using it, for both streetcars and buses.

It was not only used by cars of the "PALISADE" line, but also, by cars of the "NORTH BERGEN" and "WEST NEW YORK" car lines.

It served buses until the early 1970's, when TNJ closed it.

When I took photos of this former PS facility in 1989, a few line poles were still intact........

Just a few blocks east of me, on Anderson Avenue, there is, a block from the old "PALISADE" line ROW, a steel line pole, used as an "anchor pole", for the heavy amount of utility cables that run down my street, on a steep grade.

Many years ago, an elderly neighbor who lived in the apartment below us, told me that, many years before, PS hoisted this long-disused pole away from its former location, and placed it where it still is today, still being used as a stolid "anchor pole".

She well remembered the trolleys, including the "PALISADE" line; she also often took the "HUDSON RIVER" line down to the 125th St. Ferry, when she went to visit relatives in New York.....

The last BERGEN Division trolleys were poised to make their final runs when this photo was snapped at the 125th St. Ferry terminal at Edgewater in 1938; in the (right) background, one of the PS-owned ferryboats can just be glimpsed.

A long and colorful era was about to vanish forever.......

This is a rare "off-hour" scene at "PALISADE JUNCTION", the busiest streetcar junction on the BERGEN Division.

Here, a 3500-series "De Luxe" car (running on the "HUDSON RIVER" line) is loading passengers bound for the 125th St. Ferry terminal in Edgewater; note the complex specialwork, used by several car lines, including:

"PALISADE"

"COYTESVILLE"

"FORT LEE"

"ENGLEWOOD"

The tracks curving off to the right (running north) carried cars of the "ENGLEWOOD","COYTESVILLE", and "FORT LEE" lines.

Out of the photo on the left was the PS powerhouse; just south of it was the wye used by single-ended "PALISADE" line cars.

Note the PS bus heading west (on Columbia Avenue) towards Anderson Avenue; this is now the eastbound side of Columbia Avenue.

On the right, where you see stairs going down to the street, is now the westbound side of Columbia Avenue (some of those homes still exist today), level with the eastbound roadway.

The tall utility poles seen here along the ROW still appear the same today; large pine trees now grow where the tracks of the "HUDSON RIVER" line once ran.

The "GRANT LEE" movie house seen on the left still stands today, but now houses several businesses.

Today, remarkably, in 2020, it is very easy to match up a present-day view with this 1930's photo (looking west).

I have lived within a ten-minute walk from this once-busy location since 1974.

For many years, buses of the "#22 HILLSIDE", and the "21" laid over at this location for decades; the old "B-1" (today's #751) would also make a stop here.

The "#22" was cut back to Nungessers in 2005; the "21" (today's #181) only runs during rush hours (this line now runs only to the HBLR station in Union City at 48th St., bypassing the Junction altogether), and the #751 has also been re-routed away from the general area........

Though no location is given for this circa-1936 photo, it looks as though this might have been a "PALISADE" line car, "changing ends" at Palisades Junction, for the return trip to the Weehawken (West Shore) ferry terminal.

If this photo was taken at the Junction, there would have been a wye next to the adjacent PS power house, used for turning the single-ended cars that were also used on this line, by the 1930's.......

Circa-1950, we see a PS "Compromise" car, inbound to Penn Station, after having just left the ramp from Bloomfield Avenue (note PS bus)

The #29 was the very last of the surface lines to serve the City Subway; in March, 1952, the #29 cars were replaced by new PS buses.

Until the early 1980's, the tracks on both ramps were still intact (albeit under much overgrowth); the block signal on the inbound ramp was also still intact, as was the inbound switch.

Today, the ramps still remain, the former roadbeds now covered in blacktop.......
