A few "oddballs" in the TARS fleet.......

*This BRILL-built car was a variant of the single-truck BIRNEY of earlier years; it was a feeble attempt to revive the market for single-truck cars (albeit of a more modern design)

This unusual car (#1701) was to be used as a pilot model to convert cars of earlier vintage in a similar fashion.

The car, however, was quite prone to derailments; the car was then withdrawn from service and stored for many years at the 129th St. car house.

It was scrapped in 1942, as pat of the scrap metal drive for the War..........

Several random nostalgic TARS views.......a long, long, time ago.

Even when these timeless photos were snapped so long ago, the streetcars were indeed living on borrowed time......

A truly timeless pose of TARS #682 and her proud-looking motorman, assigned to a special run........

It is indeed sobering when one contemplates the fact, that, aside from photos and early home movies, virtually nothing remains of the once-great TARS network, outside of the several preserved cars that currently reside in various museums.

Virtually all physical reminders of the system have vanished; the men who worked the cars and manned the repair shops, have, long ago, passed on to that big car house in the sky.

How valuable these old photos are today; they, indeed, are images of a New York....and, indeed, a world.....that long ago vanished into history.......

Buses replaced streetcars on the 42nd Street Crosstown in November, 1946. Then age nine, I recall the additional stencil paint seen on the X sign of 851. To inform riders about the new bus route numbers, for perhaps a month or two the streetcars carried across the route letter the future bus route number. I think 851 shows M-102. The sign on 1058 has not yet received that stencil. If the new buses did not arrive until November, I wonder whether the convertibles had their sides installed in the meanwhile. Location: 42nd Street looking west at the Hudson River Pier. Above, the Julius Miller West Side Highway was opened in August, 1934.

Joe:

As always, greatly enjoy your contributions and input! Wink

Your remarking about the side panels on the TARS convertibles reminded me of both the B&QT convertibles and the BMT convertible elevated cars (the latter Mom remembered well, riding out to Coney Island with her family, from Park Row, when she was growing up, in the 1920's)

For many years, came the warm weather, all of the side panels on the convertible El cars were removed.

However, in later years, fewer and fewer of these panels were removed during the summer months.

By the time these veteran open-gate elevated cars were retired from Myrtle Avenue El service in 1958, only a few panels per side were taken out were removed.

The first of the BRT (later BMT) convertible El cars (1000 series) entered service in 1903; these cars had 13 removable panels per side.

The newer convertibles, the 1300's, entered service between 1905 and 1906.

Through the mid-1930's, all side panels of the convertible El cars were removed; through 1946, however, only eight panels per side were removed for the warmer weather.

This number was later reduced to six panels, and, by 1950, only four panels were taken off.......

B&QT's convertible streetcars were equipped with two sets of side panels; these reached from the floor to the herald board.

The very first convertible (streetcar) in Brooklyn was #3555; this was a prototype that entered service in 1904 (STEPHENSON); in 1906, another convertible was built (all steel construction), this time by PRESSED STEEL.

Eventually, 450 more were ordered, and lasted for decades in service, possibly the trolley most associated with the Brooklyn of that era.

Interestingly, eight of the 3700 series convertibles were rebuilt into non-convertibles for the Canarsie shuttle; 4100's were rebuilt into one-man cars, and had large folding doors added to the frront platforms.........
