Thanks for the link to this page, although I have my doubts about geographic accuracy. It seems okay about corporate history, but even that needs better details. Including the grade-separated, high-platform 12000 volts AC New York, Westchester, and Boston with streetcars is misleading. The NYW&B is well-documented by rail historians, and many of its stations can be found. The exact routes of the streetcar companies to the north of Yonkers and New Rochelle, need a better source. In particular, it must be remembered that some of these lines were subsidiaries of the New Haven Railroad and later became County Transportation. That bus company also lacks documentation on the internet. Buried on the BusTalk threads are discussions about the bus companies that replaced the non-TARS streetcars. |

Joe:
You are welcome!
If you go to Page 3 on the "New York City Buses" board, you will find a thread I started some while back, headed "Club Transport, Surface Transit, TARS, etc."
I got a lot of input in this topic, and you will find a lot on both TARS and the buses that replaced the various streetcar routes.
Hope this helps!

Came across this 1930's photo showing two TARS deck roof cars working the "P" line; a NYW&B station (with its overhanging sign) is seen on the left.......

I am fairly certain that that NYW&B building still exists around 328 Webster Avenue, New Rochelle. Google Street View shows typical NYW&B roof tiles over the stores to the left of the entrance, but the arched entrance is now a Veracruz store, and the tiles to the right have been covered over with a new protection. At this point, the NYW&Boston was double-track and soon to run out of cash. On characteristic of the below-grade stations was to establish rental stores on the street level, as at Gun Hill Road #5 subway. |

Joe:
What was interesting about "The Westchester" was that, in stations, after you purchased a ticket, you passed through a turnstile (non-coin actuated) to access the stairways that led to the platforms.
Many years ago, I rode the Dyre Avenue IRT line several times, and, in places, it was still easy to imagine what things were like back in the days when the "Westchester's" big MU's sped along the rails.
I know, up at Heathcoate, the station house was at street level, and an enclosed passageway spanned the tracks, which were below street level in a cut, and reached via stairways; for many years, the old station sat derelict and empty, and the ROW became more and more overgrown.
By the 1970's, a highway replaced the old ROW, the platforms and passageways were gone, and the old station house itself was (then) being used by ambulances, if I am correct......

Dyre Avenue, last stop of the IRT Dyre Avenue line; here, the former NYW&B station entrance is at street level, with the tracks elevated.......

Gun Hill Road station; here is another "Westchester" station house that looks much as it did decades ago, when NYW&B's big MU's called here......

In 1941, the City began operating a shuttle service between Dyre Avenue and E. 180th St*.; antiquated (though refurbished) "Manhattan" elevated cars provided the service until the 1950's, when they were replaced by elderly "Hi-V" IRT cars.
In the late 1950's, the line was tied into the IRT "mainline", ending its days as an isolated shuttle........

*Early on, the former NYW&B catenary towers and express tracks remained, as there was public agitation at the time to bring back "Westchester" express service.
This, of course, never happened.......

Here's a photo showing the Dyre Avenue shuttle early in its life, using refurbished elevated cars; as noted previously, note that the former NYW&B express tracks and catenary supports are still intact......
