This page lists the streetcar lines (of several companies) that once operated in Queens*......

*Note "OCEAN ELECTRIC"; the cars of this company ran out to the Rockaways, until the late 1920's.
Interestingly, the streetcars were also equipped with third rail shoes, to enable them to use LIRR trackage.
Their open cars were unusual in that they were converted for one-man operation, lacked running boards, and featured screened-in sides, similar to the arrangement PSNJ used on its one-man open cars........ |

Thanks for that excellent, informative list. Vincent Seyfried's books detail the history of some. After the war, Dad brought me on the full length of seven of the BMT lines then under threat of bustitution. The sole one we missed was Cypress Hills. The Richmond Hill line had swift running through Forest Park. |

Joe:
You are most welcome, my friend!
It is amazing just how extensive a streetcar network still operated in Brooklyn after the War, using a variety of equipment.
Fresh Pond Yard was also a favorite location of railfan photographers, because, until 1950, various types streetcars were still in large numbers at this location, not to mention BMT elevated and subway trains.
The softcover book I have in my library, ""LOST TROLLEYS OF QUEENS AND LONG ISLAND" (Myers) shows us just how much streetcar activity there was to be found in the area, before the conversions to buses began taking place........

Thanks for finding the Vienna photos. The donation of too-wide cars reminds me of the problems in ordinary life when people give gifts that are not good matches for our use. If I recall correctly, the TARS cars in Vienna were limited to just one straight route that ran alongside a Donaucanal. On my visit to Vienna about ten years ago, I got the chance to ride Ultra Low Floor cars. Note that their width is 2.4 meters. 7.87 feet. Wikipedia has an Ultra Low Floor article. |

Joe:
This reminds me of the BRILLINER; these cars had no problems operating on routes that were basically straight, with wider-radius turns at the ends of the line.
They were, however, quite prone to derailing on tight turns; this was one of the reasons that PSNJ passed over the Atlantic City BRILLINERS, as replacements for the old deck roof and Compromise roof cars operating in the (Newark) City Subway.
TARS seemed to be a system where "stub" terminals with crossovers ruled supreme.........

In 1947, the tramway system in Lima, Peru, purchased a number of cars from TARS; these cars ran on suburban lines.
Scroll down this page (there are many rare and interesting pictures here) to see several photos of ex-TARS cars running in Lima, equipped with pantographs.......
