The Queensboro Bridge Railway's underground terminal in Manhattan was the only location in the Five Boroughs where streetcars and buses came together underground........

Some interesting trivia on TARS/STEINWAY/B&QT........
".......Steinway suddenly started getting new, for them, rolling stock, but in reality, TARS, in effect, was using Steinway as a dumping ground for its own antiquated equipment. Steinway quickly received some converted (from battery) cars, which they just as quickly returned......"
".......then TARS purchased, rehabilitated, and repainted a small group of antiquated cars from B&QT. These cars, too, were soon removed from revenue service. Finally, TARS faced reality and purchased from several properties a fleet of relatively-new Birney cars, for operation on the lighter lines. and most of the more modern, double-truck cars, purchased from the defunct Manhattan Bridge "Three-Cent line", were used on the heavily-traveled Steinway Street line......"
"......some of the newer double-truck cars were passed on to the Queensboro Bridge Railway; these cars were replaced in 1949 by modern cars purchased from the Union street Railway of New Bedford, Massachusetts........"

Old meets "new" at Queensboro Plaza; look closely in the background, and you can just glimpse a FACCo. "Queen Mary" passing by.......

Yes, Dad brought me on the Queensborough Bridge route when it had those 'TARS" cars. I recall being very excited when the New Bedford cars showed up, more modern. And I knew of New Bedford because one of my friends from (sixth?) grade hailed from there.

At the Welfare Island stop, did passengers walk across the traffic lanes at a signal, or was there an underpass to the elevator? Mom carried some magazines there, thinking to donate them to a hospital. Having arrived at the bottom of the elevator, she inquired where the hospital was. An employee gave her a ride in his truck or van. She then realized there was a corpse in the back. He was uninterested in reading any magazines. |

Joe:
At least, you were lucky enough to ride the "Bridge Railway"; it was abandoned in 1957, the same year that Your's Truly made his debut! (I do have a few tokens from that line)
Until 1942, trains of the 2nd Avenue El (INTERBOROUGH) also crossed the QB; for many years (and I remember this well) you could still see the disconnected 2nd Avenue tracks coming off the bridge, as the #7 train pulled into the QP station.
In the 1970's, the Roosevelt Island Tram opened; I always wanted to ride it, but, somehow or other, I never got around to doing it (this was when the original gondolas/cars were still in use.......

The history of the "Tramway" is fascinating; this is an interesting operation that is all too often ignored by many area transit buffs.....

Interesting to note that the STEINWAY tunnels (which are used by the IRT #7 trains) was originally built for streetcars*.
One wonders what transit in New York might be like today, had the STEINWAY tubes remained in use by streetcars, and, today, light rail.
*Interesting information here on the attempts of early (unsuccessful) streetcar operations......

From: "UNDER THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK" (Cudahy).....
"......a group headed by Steinway purchased fifty trolley cars from the J. G. Brill Company to begin service, but, after the first test runs, a franchise dispute erupted. The tunnels sat empty until 1913, when they were made part of the Dual Contracts agreements, assigned to the IRT. Revenue subway service began in 1915......."
