Here's a "portrait" of a new BMT "D"-type TRIPLEX unit, in its original configuration; note the "porch" at the end of the unit, which was later eliminated.

As delivered, the TRIPLEX units' side sign boxes were not illuminated; soon, however, these sign boxes were illuminated by incandescent bulbs.
These hulking units were also the first New York subway cars to feature end roller curtains, displaying both route numbers and destinations.
The next New York subway cars to have this feature were the IND cars, which entered service in 1932.
If the front sign of a TRIPLEX unit was illuminated in white light, this denoted that the train was operating via the Montaque St. tunnel.
However, if the end sign glowed green, it meant that the train was operating via the Manhattan Bridge.....

Here's detailed history, track diagrams, and photos relating to the B&QT's underground trolley station at Delancey Street, Manhattan, closed since the late 1940's.......

Another underground terminal in Manhattan for streetcars (and also, buses) was the terminal for the cars of the QUEENSBORO BRIDGE Ry. (New York's last trolley line), which made their final runs in 1957 (this is an EXCELLENT page).........

Here are two QBRy cars on the Queens end of the run (older car on the left is an ex-TARS unit)
Look CLOSELY between the streetcars, and you can just glimpse a FACCo. "Queen Mary" passing by in the background, as a bonus!

Again, look closely at this photo at the QBRy terminal in Manhattan, and a STEINWAY bus can just be glimpsed on the extreme left........

Imagine going back to 1957, and going on THIS fantrip!!!!!!
Note the railfans standing along the QBRy's tracks on the Queensboro Bridge, casually taking photos; imagine the fear of lawsuits today from transit operators and rail groups??
On the left, a train of venerable "Standards" is seen rumbling by, further adding to the show!
Man, just look at the DIVERSITY our hobby once held for likeminded fellows, way, way back in a far more innocent era, which then abounded with treasures untold, transit-wise!

Underground relics of another (forgotten) era in electric transit (multi-level), at 167th St. & Grand Concourse (great photos and an interesting vintage cutaway view on this page)

Speaking of subways.........
It must have been one major undertaking, without a doubt, when the PABT terminal was being built in the late 1940's, regarding the rebuilding/relocation of the subway entrances/exits.
The IND's 8th Avenue line was the closest to the then-abuilding terminal; the IRT/BMT required a walk (via underground passages) further east.
Before the PABT was rebuilt in the late 1970's/early 80's (the once-iconic terminal lost most of his distinctive look as modernization took place) I remember the entrances/exits to the subway from the main concourse, as they were originally configured.
I can remember one entrance that still (early 1980's) was using a really sharp-looking, circa-1950 change booth that was all chrome.
I also remember that the now-defunct specials to Aqueduct Racetrack were using the now-demolished lower level IND platform at 42nd St (this was demolished when the #7 line was extended westwards beyond Times Square)
I also well remember there was an exit/entrance that led from fare control out to W 42nd St., where there was an arcade and, also, some shops (I also remember a barber shop near fare control, adjacent to the passageway leading to the IRT and BMT (I'm going back some 35-40 years now)
Still a lot of vintage signage on hand, way back then........

This (dated) page details the former lower level IND platform at 42nd St.
Rush hour "E" trains also used this platform for a time during the 70's; the last Aqueduct Specials used the platform in 1981........

Personal memory, regarding the old lower level IND platform at 42nd St......
When I'd be out railfanning, and aboard either an R-10 (or, later, an R-32) on a southbound "CC"/"C", coming back from uptown, I can still remember the signal before the switch that connected to the lower level at 42nd St. displaying red (it was still lit, way back then, though the platform itself had long been OOS)
The track leading to the lower level was designated "D3".
I can also remember, long, long ago, when rush hour "E" trains used the platform.......
