Washington Plaza, 1972.
Note that #8110 is still carrying the old "Tee-Yay" insignia, and still attired in the old (classic!) "Tee-Yay" green.
This scheme was, hands-down, my all-time FAVORITE "Tee-Yay" Fishbowl scheme, with the two-tone "Em-Tee-Yay" blue of the 70's running a CLOSE second......

South Ferry, 1972.
Here, the "Old (MaBSTOA) Order" is STILL present; not only is #6730 still in green, and still carrying the original "OA" emblem, the driver is still fully attired in "The Good Old Way".
Note, also, that the scourge of graffiti is just beginning to rear its ugly head.........

And on top of it all, on the side is a roll sign with the route description for 1 as it was prior to the 1966 one-way conversions of 5th and Madison.
(Compare to this pic of #8714 from the 1966-67 A/C batwing order, taken 1970:

[courtesy bus.nycsubway.org]
That side sign was more 'up to date'.)
The 'OA' shield first appeared on batwings with the 1965-66 order of 6701-6900. This was the 30th bus produced in this way. 680 buses, when first made, would have had this emblem at the start.
On second thought, looking at those pics: Why did 146th Street depot replace the 'OA' emblem with 'M' on #8714 first, before #6730? |
