5th Ave & 110th, 1981......
Focus on the bus at right; note that one "batwing" ad panel is missing, and that the offside roller sign box has been covered over, and is now part of an advertisement......

What could have occurred on Fifth Avenue on that day for the 1 to be rerouted down Lex? Weren't they having Salute to Israel Day Parades in NYC in '72? |

W.B.:
Thanks for jarring my memory; I believe you are correct here.
I'm pretty sure New York was having those "Salute To Israel" parades back then (1972)
That could easily explain why the #1 buses were being rerouted down Lexington, when that photo was taken.......

On a somewhat related note, I wonder if extra bus traffic was generated (or, possibly, any re-routing of lines) when the "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND PROGRESS FAIR" was held in New York, back in 1956.
I've seen a photo taken just after the massive Wannamaker fire (the resulting flooding knocked out BMT and IRT service in the area for several days) showing a huge billboard advertising the event.......

Broadway & 60th, 1973.
Again, here is another of those wonderfully dated old "Noo Yawk" photos that truly packs a BUSLOAD of nostalgia (note, too, the old signs for "HOWARD JOHNSON's" and "ARTHUR MURRAY").........

This one is particularly eye-catching (and nostalgic!)

The 'CHAMBERS ST' street sign would date its origin to 1969. |

Speaking of Chambers St.:
And older fellow I used to know said that, back in the 40's/early 50's, his family would take an ERIE commuter train to Jersey City (Pavonia Avenue) and then the ferry to Chambers St.
At the Chambers St. terminal, they would board a COMPREHENSIVE bus to City Hall, where they would grab a BMT train on their way out to visit family in Coney Island.
I've also seen a very old photo (circa 1910's) of a (battery) center entrance "NEW YORK RAILWAYS" streetcar at the Chambers St. ERIE ferry terminal (the large roll sign of the car, however, reads "1 GRAND ST. FERRY")
At that same location, I've also seen a photo of a "METROPOLITAN" horse car, bearing a dash sign that says "ROOSEVELT ST. FERRY"........

If the bus was Comprehensive, it was pre-1948; that was the year the Board of Transportation took over the Comprehensive and East Side Omnibus routes.
The "1 GRAND ST. FERRY" roll sign on that NYRys car was a tad ironic, I thought, given that today's M1's southernmost terminus is Grand Street and Broadway (but not to their ferry). |
