W.B.:
In this instance, your eyes were better than mine!
IMHO, wouldn't 1978 be a bit late in the game to see a Fishbowl still sporting the old green livery?
If this had been a bus that was clearly OOS for some time, the green scheme would not seem at all unusual.......

......to think there was actually a time when Old Looks and PCC's were just "common, everyday vehicles" on the streets of Brooklyn...........

Gun Hill Rd., 1973.
Note the Lo-V Museum Train, obviously on one of the "Farewell to the 3rd Avenue El" fan trips.
Note, too, that the New Look down below (no number visible, but you can see "55" displayed in the rear window) has had its a/c unit blocked off..........

62nd & New Utrecht, 1981.
Note the dapper driver of Flex #9056* (wearing a TIE!), holding down a "B23" run; up above, on the former BMT el, we see a grimy train of once-commonplace R-42's making a station stop.
Also, note all the big "Dee-troit" gas-guzzlers (back then, you could STILL identify an auto easily!)
How we so casually took Flexies and 42's for granted, way back then (dang, Your's Truly was only 23 when this now-nostalgic, long-ago photo was snapped!!)

*Remember when a "kneeling bus" was thought of as being so much of the future, when such features began to become commonplace, long, long ago?

The photo of the fishbowl with it’s a/c blocked off had to be during winter. Blocking the a/c grill was standard procedure with the TA and OA. I don’t remember any of the other fishbowl operators in NYC doing that.
Also, I love the side destination signs on the 9000 series Flxibles.

MabSTOA 15:
Appreciate this interesting bit of trivia....thanks!
Perhaps, then, you can fill me in on a Flex New Look photo that I have in a 1984 book on subway graffiti; there is a photo showing a street (looks to be up in the the Bronx, but I cannot be sure; there is no photo caption) with a rear view of Flex New Look #7738 as it passes under an IRT el, with a graffiti-encrusted train going by (sign boxes and car numbers are totally covered)
# 7738's a/c unit is here blocked off with an (empty) and rusty-looking ad panel.
This photo has always puzzled me; I might have mentioned it elsewhere in the past here, but cannot recall at the moment.
By the heavy clothes the people in the photo are wearing, clearly says that this photo was taken during the winter.
Was this practice of ad panels on the a/c units common at one time?
Trying to search my memory to see if I can recall other buses so fitted........

*That 1973 Gun Hill Road photo, with the Lo-V's in the station, was snapped in May......

Fulton & Alabama, 1981.
How commonplace, way back then, were Flexies like #4131, seen here holding down a "B20" run.
Note the train of once-proud R-27/30's up above; looks as though attempts were made to remove the sprawling graffiti that had adorned them (also, note the vintage UPS van)........

Tremont & Boston Rd., 1971.
This has to be one of the most "atmospheric" MaBSTOA photos of all time.
Though the subject of the photographer's camera was Fishbowl #6580, there is so much nostalgic "street furniture" in this view; this was the type of "street scene" that so many of us "sixty-ish" enthusiasts can easily recall.
Note the vintage store signage (both painted and electrical); also the telephone exchange "DA" on the exterminator's storefront.
And, of course, note the vintage taxi.
Though, clearly, this was an area that had indeed seen better days, it, nonetheless, for us today, presents a timeless, nostalgic aura that is hard to ignore, especially if you (like myself) can still recall the signage, street hardware, and, of course, the buses of that time.............

St. Nicholas & 162nd, 1983.
Here is, again, another once-commonplace site we all took for granted, once upon a yesterday.
This is also a good "contrast shot" not only between the designs of the GM Fishbowls and the Flexies, but, also, older and newer paint schemes..........

Fellows:
Going back to my lead post in this topic, I've just leaned that the R-179 fleet is now back in service.
Somehow, however, I don't think the "saga" is quite over, yet......

Regarding the photo of the new look with the Lo-V train on the el... the question was asked about a Flxible with an ad rack over the a/c condenser...
I took the photo that shows said ad rack on number 7753, the only Flxible with batwings.
If memory serves me right, I think I saw these racks on 9000 series Flxibles.

GREAT photo....and a RARE one, as well....thanks for sharing!
Many years back, I would sometimes see these ad panels on the a/c units of the Flexies; to me, they seemed most unusual, and always caught my eye, when one of the buses so equipped would go by.
I know this was something that we, here, in "Joisey" did not see on our buses!
