And who owned Dallas Transit? None other than Harry Weinberg whose early 1962 takeover of Fifth Avenue Coach Lines ultimately led to the March strike that in turn led the city to seize all their (and Surface Transit's) routes and have them placed under the aegis of MaBSTOA.

Mr. Weinberg's obit from 1990; a brief mention only about FACCo*.

As the Brits would have said of the late Mr. Weinberg, "The old boy was rolling in money."

Certainly a man of great wealth, finance-wise.......

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-11-06-mn-4032-story.html

*One cannot help wondering, had it not been for the 1972 strike, would FACCo. remained an independent coimpany for the next few decades. only becoming a part of the extended MTA family in later years, when TRIBORO, STEINWAY, etc. became a part of the MTA........

Fellows:

Though I never rode on an MTA RTS (except, years later, when several went over to ACADEMY), I certainly saw them each working day for many years when I worked downtown, I never really looked at them all too much, until 1992.

That was when I rode my first RTS, while on a largely transit-oriented vacation in Boston.

That was when I started to "warm" to them; and really enjoyed riding those on ACADEMY, and, later NJT.

It was only after the last RTS in my area began to vanish many years back, that I finally started to sense that I was indeed witnessing the twilight of a classic.

I never cared at all for the NABI's (and still do not; they remind me of economy-sized milk cartons on wheels, nothing more; I really missed the old Flex METROS after they vanished, well over a decade ago.

In all honesty, even 40 years hence, I, personally, cannot see any of today's cookie-cutter buses as being thought of as "classics", at least, not in the same vein as the Old Looks, Fishbowls, and the RTS.......

IMHO, this was truly the LAST of the true "classic" buses to operate for the "Em-Tee-Ay".........

'TRIFECTA!"*

(Bowery & Mott, 1981)

*Talk about the classics we took so much for granted!

You'd have to be at a vintage bus show to try to duplicate this classic lineup today! Shocked

On that second pic, the building at far right is no more, having recently been demolished . . . and the 'Portland Orange' 'DONT WALK' on that Marbelite 'Lawdescent Lite' LPS-20. A lot of that whole south-side block of 34th between 2nd and 3rd has changed since when that shot was lensed.

Don't know if this was put up before . . . but a rare shot of the 1982 RTS T8J-204 variant with Luminator electronic roll sign, plowing through the snow at 34th and Park in 1983:

W.B.:

I guess that the old saying is indeed true, "Nothing remains but the memories".

When looking at decades-old bus photos,it never ceases to amaze me as to how many of the structures in the photos (and, also, entire blocks) that looked as though they would last for eons more, have been since razed.

Too, virtually every business establishment seen in those old photos has long since disappeared into the history books.......time never stands still.......but so much is lost in the eternal ticking of the proverbial clock......

W.B.:

I had put up the link to this great photo in my "BUSES IN DA SNOW" thread quite awhile back; however, I certainly DO NOT mind seeing it again! Wink

Again, it really amazes me of how much we once took for granted.......

Beach 44th, 2006.

Interesting variations here (taillights, number plates, etc.)

Also, note train of "Brightliners"; like the RTS, these classic subway cars are themselves retired.....

Thanks for your many selections - they are fun to see. While the R-38s were bright, I understand that "Brightliners" referred only to R-32s (maybe I'm wrong).

....you are MOST welcome: I enjoy "sharing" memories (via old photos) of the "good old days" of transit that we all took so much for granted, back in the day. Very Happy

You are correct about the R-32's; these were the cars dubbed "Brightliners"; I always called th R-38's "The Great Pretenders"(AKA "Brightliner Wannabes" Wink

Though I only rode an RTS in the City once, way back in the mid-80's, I did ride ex-MTA RTS's many times on ACADEMY's "#22 HILLSIDE", back in the 1990's; as time went by, I really got to appreciate the RTS, and still miss them today (there hasn't been one in my area in close to 20 years)

Interesting to note that, the MTA began operating the RTS some years after the "indy" companies began operating them; in fact, from what I've read, the RTS era for the MTA really started with the Series 04, and that was largely due to the infamous GRUMMAN fiasco..........
