"THE MIGHTY HATH FALLEN"
(100-to-1, that roller sign was destroyed along with this once-proud bus).........

I believe that these suburban type coaches were used on the Racetrack runs to Yonkers Raceway and Roosevelt Raceway |

Hart Bus:
I believe you are correct.
A suburban-style bus such as that MACK (w/no rear doors) would have been most unsuitable for "stop-and-go" city service.
When I was growing up in New Jersey, the only suburban MACKS I knew were those operated by the now-defunct ORANGE & BLACK.
In the Bay area, GREYHOUND once rostered 30 MACK suburbans (C-49DM's)
One of these rare buses still exists today, as part of the Pacific Bus Museum.
Too bad none of those from "AVENUE B" survived.....

Cherry & Pike, 1972.
Suburban-model MACKS always seemed to have an air of dignity about them, even when standing still.......

It might be just me, but the windows remind me somewhat of those used on an ACF-BRILL.
A HANDSOME bus, nonetheless........

I remember riding this bus very well when living in Mineola back in the '60's. Very unique and very rare, this would have been a great candidate for preservation, but unfortunately none exist today.
I also rode this bus to Yankee Station as a teenager with the Mineola Police Boy's Club when we chartered it for the day to and from the game.
And yes, this Mack did have air suspension and rode very smoothly.
Great memories! |

You were VERY lucky indeed to ride on that classic MACK; talk about great memories!
The last time I ever rode on a MACK in my area was about 1967/1968; by that time, it was clear that MACKS were indeed poised to vanish forever.
Only a few years earlier, however, MACKS were quite commonplace with several "indy" companies in my area.
Both MACKS and ACF-BRILLS were (IMHO) tough-looking buses (GM's always looked a bit more "refined" to my eyes!)
In later years, I nicknamed the MACKS "Jack Dempseys" and the ACF-BRILLS "Rocky BRILL-boas"........
Hard to believe that such buses are now gone from my area over 50 years now...........I still miss those rugged ol' beasts today.....

Ex-GREYHOUND P-1683, the very last survivor of the suburban MACKS once operated by GREYHOUND (until the early 70's) in Bay-area commuter service.
A rare and classic bus, indeed........

The ONLY time you'll hear Your's Truly EVER refer to a MACK as being "cute" is when I'm mentioning these CUTE lil' buggers from 'Frisco; MUNI cut down a couple of their MACKS due to the tight turning clearances at the end of one line (Coit Tower?) and these "Baby" MACKS were the result........

The font on the front rollsign in pic #3924 looks like it could have originated from Trans-Lite Corp. Its type looked way different from Transign's. |

W.B.:
If I thought ANYONE here would have noticed difference in the MACK rollsigns, my bottom dollar would have been on you!
MUNI was a "big city" property that kept their MACK fleet running longer than most other cities; they also kept WHITES running for quite some time.
There was an article many years ago in BUS WORLD magazine about Scranton's (PA) WHITE fleet, which lasted into the early 70's.
Interestingly, they were replaced with ex-PSNJ buses!
