Hillside Avenue & 255th St., 1978.
This late 70's photo is dated not only by the New Look, but also, the large billboard ad for cigarettes.......

I am sure the photographer who snapped this photo of the MAN artic demo back in 1974 was not in the least interested in the Staten Island Ferry's vehicular toll booths in the background.
This photo reminds us of the days when the ferryboats still carried vehicles, which they haven't done since that tragic day in September, 2001......

Not to mention a wholly different operator for the bus route in question . . .
But since you mentioned the cigarette ad, the boxed warning language has sure changed since that time. |

W.B.:
Indeed, time does not stand still for anyone, or anything.
It never ceases to amaze me of just how many changes take place in trainsit over the years; mergers, abandonments, cutbacks.....once-commonplace equipment becoming more and more rare until finally disappearing into history.
Too, in these old photos, we view business establishments that have not existed for decades, more modern street lighting and traffic signals, etc.
All the more reason that these old bus (and other transit) photos are so valuable; they truly are glimpses into another era, another time, another world......

This 1972 photo shows clearly how much we took for granted, and just how much things have changed over the decades.
Note only have the New Looks themselves vanished, but also, the long-established bus lot (note the RED & TAN buses) has also disappeared; I've heard that a new building now sits on that site, adjacent to the church.
I recall seeing this very same for years.....for the longest time, it all seemed to stay the same.....

This 1981 scene near the Lincoln Tunnel helix is still another example of "change".
The Manhattan Lines Fishbowl (like the company itself) has long since vanished; the approaching GREYHOUND would today be as dated as the iconic SCENICRUISER.
Note too, the "RED STAR" rigs heading westbound on the helix overhead; this long-established trucking company has also disappeared down the echoing corridors of time.
This was a scene I once viewed too many times to count, back in the day.....

Indeed, a new building does sit on that site. On 41st Street is a Success Academy. The whole area has been built up. And on a very hot sunny day, it becomes even hotter and you need sunglasses all the time. |

W.B:
The last time I rode a bus out of the PABT was the day I retired, back in 2003; I have not been in the city since (after nearly 25 years of working downtown); it goes without saying that much must have changed in those 15 years.
I also well remember idle buses awaiting the PM rush hours underneath the PABT ramps; for years, of course, Fishbowls dominated those storage lots......

Here are two early 80's PABT rush hour scenes that, sadly, we all took for granted (I know I did)
GM products, indeed, dominated the scene; again, who would have ever thought that GM would have pulled out from the bus industry?
I know I never did.
Enjoy these two now-classic scenes......
http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3428 *Look closely beneath the ramps; you'll see the opened engine compartment door of a Fishbowl that was obviously in need of some sort of repair.
Too, you cannot help but think that the drivers of these buses seen in these two photos have long since been retired, or, sadly, have passed on........
