And, at what point would the M32's north/eastbound route have its transition point from Madison Avenue moved from 57th to 59th Street (and, on south/westbound trips, from 57th to 60th Street onto Fifth)?

W.B:

Any clues as to what company operated the coach seen behind the van, facing the camera?

Again, I love New York "street" photos like this that show much of interest, beside the camera subject itself.

This is especially true, when the photo was taken a few (or more) decades ago........

Columbus & 65th, 1972........

*Also note the old-style MABSTOA insignia (cool!), as well as the ads for "RINGLING BROS." and "MERV" on WNEW 5.

Notice, too, the old telephone exchange (even then outdated) on the sign above the street, on the side of the old brick building......

81st St. & Central Park West.

The GRUMMAN dates this photo as much as the Checker Marathon, as well as the ads on the Fishbowl in the background..............

I can't really tell from that photo, but wasn't that around the time of the big scandal with the cracked frames (or was it axle's?) on the Grumman 870 fleet?

IIRC, the MTA arranged to lease a bunch of temporary replacements from both the Washington DC system, as well as a fleet of white, retired MC-8's from Hausman Bus Sales, formerly in the Greyhound fleet. That photo looks like it could be a white MC-8.

Those were the only restroom equipped coaches ever operated by the MTA to my knowledge, although they were locked while in MTA service...

traildriver:

I well recall the GRUMMAN fiasco, back then (almost 40 years ago, now!); that was when the convoy of WAMATA New Looks trekked north to "bail out" the affected fleet.

I was only working downtown a few years at that time, but still clearly remember seeing one or two Fishbowls still wearing the 1960's DC TRANSIT paint scheme.

I also remember the media was having a field day with the mess; that was still when Checker Marathons were still commonplace on the streets as well........where have all the years gone....?? Rolling Eyes

"NYO"

BTW:

I am now remembering seeing an EAGLE that was painted mostly white, about the early/mid-80's; this MIGHT have been the same bus seen in a photo in the 1985 book "AMERICAN BUSES", by David Jacobs (the bus was lettered for "BOYD's")

The bus was signed for "AMBOY RD."

42nd & Broadway, 1981.

The WAMATA Fishbowl on the left is still wearing its 1960's DC TRANSIT paint (is that a "Hound" approaching in the distance??)

The Checker Marathon further dates this old photo, now nearly 40 years old.......

*Also, note the classic 1950's-era "TOPP'S" restaurant/bar sign on the left.........

Just before that building was torn down to make room for the HQ of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

As for the building which housed the Chemical Bank branch . . . I remember one of those pre-ATM depositories at that very place, whose letters were so messed up that it ended up reading as 'DEFOSITOPY'.

Ah yes, the same color scheme as on that 1956 demonstration air-conditioned bus ('3200') that, because of its 102" width, Fifth Avenue Coach Lines could not keep.

NYO--

That MC-7 approaching on 42nd street looks to me like a Carey, on its way to either the West Side Airlines Terminal or Newark Airport. Greyhound owned Carey, Gray Line, and Walter's Transit at about that time, IIRC.

As for a 'white Eagle displaying Amboy Rd'.....just a guess...could have been operated by Domenico? I know they had a penchant for buying retired GL Scenicruiser's, to be used on their Staten Island to Manhattan commuter runs, so perhaps they purchased Eagle(s) too, although I don't actually recall seeing any....

traildriver:

The only info given in the "AMERICAN BUSES" book on that Eagle 10 was that it was operated by "BOYD's".

Your guess, here, would be as good as mine (if not better); this one is a stumper for yours truly..... Rolling Eyes
